When the world converges on Athens in August of this year, we will be continuing our celebration of a most unique event in the history of humankind - the Olympic Games. For this brief period, a world vision will inspire us all. Differences among nations will not matter as much. Rich, lifelong friendships and memories will be made. And an adventure will begin that will give to many, particularly our young people, an invaluable opportunity to listen, to learn, to understand, and to grow. Our world is well served by the Olympic Games, the Olympic Ideals and the Olympic Truce - a time-out from violence, conflict and war that I urge all to take. For when we do so, we allow ourselves to stop and contemplate our world, not as it is, but as it ought to be - a global village fully in accord with the goals and objectives of the United Nations Charter.

Tips on: Sydney 2000 Olympic games Sydney 2000 Olympic games-general Tip: Olympic Ceremonies Ceremonies An introduction The best thing about Olympic ceremonies is the element of surprise. In 1996, an estimated worldwide audience of 3.5 billion viewers was caught off-guard, momentarily transfixed by the events unfolding inside Olympic Stadium in Atlanta. United States swimming star Janet Evans was carrying the Olympic Flame as she ascended a long, steep ramp. Above her, his face suddenly bathed in light, stood "The Greatest" — 1960 Olympic boxing champion Muhammad Ali. The crowd´s applause grew to a deafening roar as Evans passed the torch to Ali, who held it aloft triumphantly. Visibly shaking from the effects of Parkinson´s disease, his unheralded appearance at the Opening Ceremony would become a major highlight of the Atlanta Games.

    ARCHIVES AND HISTORY
    OF THE HELLENIC OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
edited by Prof. Christina Koulouri This publication is meant to make known the richness of the Archives of the HEC, which were classified under the direction of Professor Christina Koulouri. An exceptionally analytic database was designed especially for the HOC archives in accordance with its particular needs and the research potential. This database is user-friendly and allows the researcher to pursue many lines of research, as well as the printing of catalogues of every type – thematic, chronological, etc. – in a rough form. For the period 1894-1936, the computer entry was carried out by document, while for the period 1937-1972 by folder. The HOC archives highlight the history of the Committee itself, as the oldest central athletic institution in Greece, on the one hand, and the history of Greek sport in general in combination with the political, social, economic and cultural changes that took place in Greece during the 20th century, on the other. The fact that the HOC was in charge of and managed the main sports grounds in the region of the capital (Panathenean Stadium, Velodrome and the Rifle Range at Kallithea) for many years strengthened the role it played in the organisation of sports events. At the same time, the holding of the Olympic Games every four years bestowed on the HOC an international role that other sports institutions did not have, like SEGAS (Union of Greek Gymnastic and Sports Clubs) and various sports federations, at least during the first half of the 20th century.

A 'Brief' History of Taekwondo Taekwondo is 42 years old or 2000 years old, depending on which way you look at it. Specifically, the name and the rules were born in 1957. In reality, the makings of the sport date back to ancient times, with murals of men engaged in unarmed combat found in the ruins of royal Korean tombs almost 2000 years old. The martial arts have remained part of Korean culture throughout the succeeding millennia. They soared to a high point 800 years ago, when a self-defence art called su-bak gained a large following. Evidence even suggests it became a sport in the truest sense, entertaining spectators. Su-bak eventually faded from the public scene, but the martial arts survived as recreation. In the first half of the 20th century, Japanese occupation led to an attempt to wipe out Korean culture, including the country's martial arts, yet they still survived. Then, after World War II ended and Korea was liberated, interest surged again. A group of leading Korean martial artists joined together in the 1950s and tried to unify their various art forms under a single style of hands-and-feet fighting. In 1957, they succeeded and named the unified style Taekwondo, which means "the way of hands and feet". By the early 1960s, Korean soldiers and police were learning the art, and interest was spreading overseas.
