The new scratch card is one of a series of games expected to raise £750m by 2012 - part of £1.5bn of lottery money going towards the Olympics. Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said the game was being launched now to give it enough time to raise that money. The 'Go for Gold' cards will cost £1 each and will go on sale on Thursday. Dianne Thompson, chief executive of the Lottery operator Camelot, said that 28p in every pound will go to the Olympic Lottery Distribution Fund. They are the first sports to be cut from the Games in 69 years and it means Regents Park, which was due to host them, will no longer be a 2012 venue. Squash and karate were initially nominated as their replacements but neither polled enough IOC members' votes to win a place at the Games. Rugby union sevens, golf and roller skating were also in the running. International Olympic Committee members went through seven rounds of voting to decide which two of the five sports should be put up for a vote to give them Olympic status. Squash and karate were chosen, but not enough of the IOC members wanted them to be included. It means the earliest they can now be introduced into the Games is 2016.

"British Columbia is one of the world's great tourist destinations," said British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell. "The 2010 Games will bring out the best of British Columbia, and we want to showcase our province and our country to the world." A comprehensive strategic plan is being undertaken by the British Columbia tourism industry to accelerate and maximize tourism opportunities throughout British Columbia. Vancouver 2010 will serve as the catalyst for this growth by stimulating increased awareness which will be channeled into strategic opportunities in destination promotion, product development and media relations for all regions of British Columbia. “Tourism in British Columbia is currently a $9.3 billion industry, and we believe that hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics can help us achieve a level of tourism activity before, during and after the Games that will accomplish the economic impact goals set out in the Vancouver 2010 Bid proposal,” added Mike Duggan, chair of Tourism British Columbia. “Our organization is working with partners such as Tourism Vancouver, Tourism Whistler, Tourism Victoria, Tourism Richmond and the Canadian Tourism Commission to ensure appropriate preparation and management of the tourism opportunities.”

Athens' aura shines next to athletes' memorable performances
ATHENS, Greece - Little things meant a lot in Athens: a tear from Mia Hamm's eye, or a smile across Jennie Finch's mouth, was as good as gold. A pair of abandoned wrestling shoes, size 13, signaled goodbye for Rulon Gardner. A track baton, about a foot long, turned to kryptonite as the U.S. women's 400-meter relay team fumbled the last medal hopes of Sydney superwoman Marion Jones. These snapshots make up the bigger picture in Athens: 17 days of emotion and excitement in the birthplace of the games, 108 years after the first modern Olympiad in the same Mediterranean city. Athletes followed the ancient footsteps of a doomed distance runner from Marathon, or collected medals in arenas long reserved for Olympic ghosts. The Americans embraced the history and made a little themselves: They broke the 100-medal mark to eclipse their team goal. With 103 medals (35 gold, 39 silver, 29 bronze), they topped the Athens medal chart and enjoyed their largest haul since Barcelona's 108 in 1992. But they left Greece with more than just a cache of precious metals.
