The Green Games
Greenpeace conceived the idea of a Green Olympics . Our aim was to ensure the 'Green Games' were a global showcase for environmental solutions The Olympics campaign began back in 1992 when Greenpeace won a design competition for the Athletes' Village. In 1993, a specific set of Environmental Guidelines for the Games, developed by Greenpeace, were passed into law by the NSW Government. We continued to play a vital watchdog role for the next seven years. Many top athletes supported our vision for a Green Games, and even members of the Olympic movement resolved to 'Let the Games be Green' Greenpeace was there to make sure the plans for the first truly 'Green Games' became a reality. By releasing an Olympic Report every 100 days from 1995 to 2000, we kept environmental issues firmly on the agenda. Our non-violent direct actions increased public awareness and pressured decision makers and stakeholders to reduce the Games' environmental impact.

E-Mail: pressoffice@cornell.edu New York City selects Cornell to head up impact study of 2012 Olympic Games ITHACA, N.Y. In its efforts to land the 2012 Olympic Games, New York City has turned to Cornell University for help. To complete its application, the city has asked Cornell's Center for the Environment to put together a plan for conducting a global impact study and a team of prominent environmental, social and economic scientists from leading academic institutions to carry it out if New York gets the games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) requires that each city have an environmental impact study plan in place as part of its application process. If New York lands the games, Cornell has committed to conducting the extensive monitoring needed to assess the impact that the games would have at the local, state, national and even world levels. The study would last a decade and analyze almost 150 indicators before, during and after the games. "In 1999, the IOC embraced the goal of sustainable development," says Mark Bain, director of the Center for the Environment. "This is a pioneering effort to look at the true consequences that the games would have on its host city. Thus, we formulated a plan that includes multiple institutions with interdisciplinary experts, not only to assess the influence of the Olympics on New York but also to create a comparable benchmark for all future games and to help bidding cities and future organizations identify potential legacies to maximize the Olympic Games' benefits."

April 23, 1998 Future Olympic Games site Sydney has full range of excitement to offer By DAVID L. LANGFORD
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Down in Australia, where they're all atwitter getting ready for the 2000 Olympic Summer Games, they're trying to get the word out that sybaritic Sydney is a party town, not just a place of beaches and boats. That's scant news to the world's gays and lesbians. In this city founded as a British penal colony, the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade attracts more than half a million revelers, the biggest annual tourist event in Australia. The Lonely Planet travel guide says the "gay and lesbian culture is so strong in Sydney that it's almost mainstream . . . probably the second-largest gay community in the world." On the horizon are the Summer Olympic Games, Sept. 15-30, 2000. They are expected to draw 1.5 million visitors to this city of about 3.7 million (out of Australia's total of 18 million). An expected shortage of hotel rooms has even brought suggestions of anchoring a dozen or so cruise ships in Sydney Harbor and Botany Bay for sleeping quarters.

Piedmont Piedmont is one of the largest Italian regions_ it occupies almost the whole of north-west Italy, covering over 25,000 km2 with a population of 4,500,000. The area around Torino is spotted with Savoy residences_ La Palazzina di Caccia (the Royal Hunting Lodge) of Stupinigi, and the Castles of Rivoli, Racconigi and Aglie. Artistic holy buildings include the Abbeys of Ranverso, Vezzolano and Novalesa, the Sacra di San Michele, the Cathedral of Torino, which houses the Holy Shroud and Holy Mounts. In addition to the mountains that will host the Games, Monviso, Gran Paradiso and Monte Rosa guarantee unique opportunities for practising winter sports. The hilly regions of the Langhe and Monferrato feature numerous castles and characteristic villages, making these charming areas to visit.

There are an infinite number of opportunities for practising sports in close contact with nature_ on lakes, rivers, in woods and in specially equipped centres. Torino To discover Torino one has to search through twenty centuries of history. Walking through its streets is a bit like visiting an open-air museum. From Roman Torino, represented by the Palatine Gates, to the Baroque face of the town, designed by great architects such as Guarino Guarini or Filippo Juvarra_ examples of this style being Palazzo Carignano, or the dome of the Cappella of the Sindone (the chapel that houses the Turin Shroud), both of which are the work of Guarini.

Background 1993 was a very significant year in Australia. In September 1993 Sydney won the right to stage the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. On 1 March 1993 the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) commenced as national legislation requiring equal opportunities for people with disabilities. To plan and implement construction of the various venues and facilities for the 2000 Games the NSW Government established the Olympic Co-ordination Authority (OCA). The Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) and the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee (SPOC) were established to manage and operate the 2000 Games. In 1995 ACROD (the peak organization of disability service providers) was asked by OCA to prepare Access Guidelines for these venues and facilities, with a goal of best practice accessible and equitable environments. As part of the planning group that developed these Access Guidelines, our aim was to identify the appropriate processes for implementing accessible environments, schedule the required access codes and legislation, and provide recommended best practice guidelines. Olympic Village In August 1995 OCA called for expressions of interest for development of an Olympic Village suitable for the estimated 15,000 athletes and associated personnel during the Olympic Games and estimated 7,000 athletes and personnel during the Paralympic Games.

Environment is a Player at the 2004 Olympic Games, U.N. Says The environment has gained increased visibility in the Olympic movement, according to a statement from the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) as the Athens 2004 Olympic Games prepare to open August 13 in Greece. "The return of the Olympic Games to Athens, where they originated some 2000 years ago, has sparked renewed interest in the historic reality of the competition," said UNEP Executive Director Klaus Toepfer in an August 10 statement. "Respect for nature was a feature of ancient Greek civilization."

Sport Parachuting and the Olympic Programme version française During its meeting held on 29 August 2002, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board discussed the Olympic programme for the future Games of the Olympiad, specifically the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 in Beijing. Following the recommendations of the Olympic Programme Commission, the IOC Executive Board decided not to admit parachuting to the Programme of Beijing 2008. While very disappointed, the FAI thanks the IOC for its clear statements of the arguments leading to this decision, which will be helpful for the further development of parachuting and indeed all Air Sports.

Future of Air Sports in the International Arena

Although the third attempt by Sport Parachuting to become an Olympic sport has proved unsuccessful, FAI will continue to seek to develop Air Sports worldwide, aiming to render them more popular and attractive to the media. Among other projects, FAI is currently working on the 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg, the 3rd FAI World Air Games planned to be held in 2005, and FAI’s 100th Anniversary in 2005. After a thorough review, FAI - an IOC Recognised Federation - will consider whether to submit further bids for parachuting, gliding, hang-gliding and paragliding to be included in future Olympic Games.
Sport Parachuting at the 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg
As a proof of the major role played by air sports in the international arena, the IWGA (International World Games Association) Executive Committee recently confirmed that parachuting would be one of the main attractions of the 7th World Games to be held from 14 to 24 July 2005 in Duisburg (GER). For its third participation in the World Games, the parachuting programme will consist of at least four disciplines : Men’s and Women’s Freestyle Skydiving, Mixed Accuracy Landing and Mixed Formation Skydiving. The inclusion of a fifth discipline – Canopy Piloting – has been accepted in principle by the IWGA – Executive Committee, subject to approval by the FAI Parachuting Commission in February 2003.

"There is no more weather-dependent event than the Olympic Winter Games, and they are at risk," Lash said. "Ski areas that previously could be depended on for fabulous conditions by December and January now have green slopes where formerly giant slaloms took place."
Lash singled out skiing events held in the Alps region, where the snow is no longer reliable for competitive events at lower altitudes.

Olympic Truce The Olympic Truce The idea of the Olympic Truce is based upon the deep belief that athletics and Olympic ideals can contribute to the creation of a peaceful and better world. The basic aim of this endeavor is to facilitate initiatives that promote dialog, reconciliation, mutual understanding, solidarity and peace. The Olympic Truce is a performance of all people and as such it aims at emphasizing the significance of respecting peaceful co-existence. Greece decided that it should offer something unique, something above and beyond for the implementation of peace, aside the principles of the Olympic Games and the Cultural Olympics; that is the reason for the country's pursuance and achievement in reviving the Olympic Truce. The significance of the effort concealed behind the Olympic Truce is the fact that it combines the strength of an Olympic Movement, the credibility of the athletic movement and the enthusiasm of the younger generation. It should be clarified that it is not for the younger generation alone, but for anyone and everyone who supports and is willing to work for peace under the auspice of the Olympic Ideal. The objective is to combine the spirit and the dynamics of these movements and to seek contributions to resolve existing worldwide conflicts.

Patrick announced that the Atlanta Committee for the olympic games (ACOG) has agreed The olympic Stadium will serve as a model for all future stadiums.
http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/1996/May96/222.cr.htm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CR WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1996 (202) 616-2765 TDD (202) 514-1888 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES AND PARALYMPICS TO BE ACCESSIBLE TO SPECTATORS WITH DISABILITIES WASHINGTON, D.C. Calling it "the most accessible stadium in the world," Assistant Attorney General Deval L. Patrick today toured the Olympic Stadium, home to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The site will also host the 10th Paralympiad, which begins on August 15. "The eyes of the world will be upon us," said Patrick. "Everyone will be able to see world class events in a world class stadium providing world class access to athletes and spectators." The Justice Department began working together with organizers of the summer Olympics three years ago to ensure that the sports venues were built to be accessible to people with disabilities. The Department's efforts focused on the Olympic Stadium, as well as other venues including the Olympic aquatic center, the Stone Mountain Memorial tennis center, and the Morris Brown College and Clark Atlanta University field hockey stadiums. Patrick announced that the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) has agreed to ensure that the construction of these five newly-built venues are completed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The agreements set out the way in which the stadium and other venues will be accessible during the Olympics as well as when they are converted for future use after the Paralympics. The Olympic Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 85,000, will: designate 1% of its seats for wheelchair users and disperse the spaces throughout the stadium, including in suites and on the Club level; ensure that each wheelchair space is next to a conventional seat so that spectators with disabilities can sit next to family and friends; ensure that virtually all wheelchair seats have a comparable "line of sight," so that wheelchair users can still see the playing surface even when spectators in front of them stand up during the event; make concession stands, restrooms, parking areas, bank machines, locker rooms, and employee work areas accessible. "This agreement sets a new standard for stadium access," added Patrick. "The Olympic Stadium will serve as a model for all future stadiums." Following the summer games, the Olympic Stadium will be converted for use by the Atlanta Braves, and the other venues will continue to be used as sporting facilities. The ADA, passed in July 1990, prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. Title III of the Act requires public accommodations built prior to January 26, 1993, including stadiums, to remove physical barriers to access when it is readily achievable to do so. Buildings constructed after that date must be built in accordance with architectural standards known as the ADA's Standards for Accessible Design. Under Title II of the Act, new state and local government buildings must also be accessible. Metropolitan Atlanta Olympic Games Authority, a state entity created to stage the Olympics with ACOG, also signed today's stadium agreement. "We have been working closely for some time with the Olympic organizers and are pleased with their efforts to make their facilities accessible for all people with disabilities," said Patrick. "We also appreciate the assistance of members of the disability rights community during the past few years." The Olympics, scheduled to begin on July 19, will host over 12,000 athletes. The Paralympics, scheduled to begin on August 15, will host more than 3,500 athletes with disabilities from more than 120 nations. In 1994, Attorney General Janet Reno launched a national campaign to educate Americans about their rights and obligations under the ADA. She is committed to reaching out to businesses to urge voluntary compliance with the law. The campaign, which included television and radio public service announcements, promotes a toll-free ADA Information Line. The number is 800- 514-0301 or 800-514-0383 (TDD). # # # 96-222
