Summer Olympic Games
The Summer Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event held every four years, organised by the International Olympic Committee . The Olympics are the most prestigious of such events in the world, featuring a larger range of sports than others. Medals are awarded in each event, with gold for first place, silver for second and bronze for third, a tradition which started in 1904. Competitors are entered by a National Olympic Committee NOC ) to represent their country of citizenship. National anthems and flags accompany the medal ceremonies, and some countries take their patriotism so far as to tabulate medal counts for each competing country, though the IOC does not place any value on these. In general only recognised nations are represented, but a few non-sovereign countries are allowed to take part. The special case of Taiwan was handled by having it compete as Chinese Taipei , to avoid the issue of Taiwanese independence.

Restoration and Film Treatment
The IOC is committed to repairing and restoring the Olympic images acquired through the programme. The material, in many cases the original negative, undergoes ultrasonic cleaning, repair, scratch treatment and preparation for telecine at one of the top film treatment centres in London. It is then fully graded and wet-gate telecined to make highest quality digital tape masters (Digi Beta PAL and D3 PAL). The original material is placed in the Olympic Museum's deep storage facility which conforms with FIAF/FIAT recommended temperature and humidity conditions.
The IOC has adopted a long term approach to the global problem of film stock deterioration and is undertaking to transfer all film and television material of the Olympic Games onto digital tape format ensuring the safe preservation of the Olympic Movement's heritage for generations to come.

Beijing Games win divides world opinion
Many of Beijing's 13 million residents poured into the city center to join the celebrations By staff and wire reports BEIJING, China Beijing has won the right to stage the 2008 Olympic Games, recording a landslide victory in the face of worldwide concern on China's human rights record. The Chinese capital prevailed on the second round of a secret International Olympic Committee ballot by receiving 56 votes, three more than the required majority and 34 votes ahead of second-placed Toronto. As the estimated 200,000 revellers who had converged on Tiananmen Square awoke to face day one in the lead-up to the Games, reaction to the decision filtering in from around the world was mixed. In the winning city, newspaper headlines matched the delirious mood of the population. "Smiles Everywhere, Joy Ignites," blazed a headline in the Beijing Morning Post beneath a picture of a man spraying beer from a shaken bottle of beer.

The stadium at the 1896 Athens Games, the first of the modern Olympics. The Olympic Games are the creation of the Ancient Greeks with records of the first competition dating back to 776 BC. The Games reigned supreme in Ancient Greece for 12 centuries until in 393 AD Emperor Theodosius founded them to be a pagan celebration and thus ended the competition. It wasn't until the late 1800's that Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin began researching and rallying support for the rebirth of the Olympic Games. His hard work succeeded and in 1896 Athens was the host city of the first of the modern Olympic Games.
1896 Athens, Greece

Among the many gifts bequeathed to the modern world by the ancient Greeks (eg democracy) is the idea of athletics and organised competitive sport, of which the ancient Olympic Games were the most famous. The word athlete is a Greek word and connected with the words athlos , a contest for a prize, and athlon , a prize. An athlete is thus a person who competes for a prize. Origin of the Games Despite the attribution of the games to such legendary heroes as Pelops and Heracles, the consensus of opinion in antiquity was that the first Olympics began in 776BC. They were held in honour of Zeus of Olympia and were thus a religious festival, unlike the modern Olympics. As Zeus was the king of the gods, so were his games the most prestigious of the four great Panhellenic Games (Olympian, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean). They had a life of almost 1200 years, being closed down possibly in 393AD by the Emperor Theodosius the Great as being a pagan religious festival. Where were the Games held?

The export impact of the Olympic Games
"AND THE WINNER IS - SYDNEY" were the words spoken by International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch when Sydney successfully won its bid to host the Olympic Games in the year 2000. It is now just over a year before we let the games begin on 15 September, 2000. There is great anticipation (as well as much construction activity) in Sydney as we close in on the first significant world event of the new millennium. The economic benefits of the 2000 Olympics can be classified as direct and indirect. Direct benefits include the impact of the Olympics on exports, investment and employment. In terms of exports, the main impact will be inbound tourism, sponsorship fees, media broadcast rights, and ticket sales.

Anne K. Hutton, "The Olympic Games: Lessons for Future Host Cities"
In 1896 the first modem Olympic Games occurred in Athens, Greece, in large part due to the passion and dedication of one man, French educator Pierre de Coubertin. His goal was to bring sport to the world by bringing athletes together to compete. Concurrently the International Olympic Committee was formed. Its primary role was to select the cities that would host the Olympic Games. Throughout the 20th century the Olympic Games have grown to gigantic proportions and have become extremely sophisticated since their inception over 100 years ago. The role that a city plays in hosting the Games is vital, as the impacts from the Games are significant. Initially, cities that hosted the Games were required to provide basic lodgings and services, but as the Olympics grew, particularly after World War 11, the Games required more intense planning and organization. As the importance of the Games grew so too did the political and financial involvements. The Games have been a target of terrorism, political statements and more recently of corporations and sponsors. As the Olympic Games have progressed, each new Games has built on the experience of those which preceded it. For some host cities, Olympic Games provide both the opportunity and the means by which they may revitalize, enhance and promote themselves internationally. The intent of this thesis is to examine five cities that have previously hosted the Olympic Games and to draw planning lessons from each. The Olympic cities that have been chosen are: Montreal, Canada, 1976; Barcelona, Spain, 1992; Lillehammer, Norway, 1994; Atlanta, United States, 1996 and Sydney, Australia, 2000. Each case study will be broken down into four categories, they are: the political and administrative structure, physical and social planning, financial planning and strategy and the multiplier effects. The case studies will provide the raw material from which a number of observations and insights will be developed. It is intended that these might contribute to the planning process for future Olympic host cities.

71.123-141 The Ancient Olympic Games and the 1896 Games: Differences and Future Prospects
by Dr Maxwell L. Howell (Canada), Professor, Chairman of the Physical Education Department of the University of Alberta It is widely held that the Ancient Olympic Games began at Olympia in 776 B.C. and were held every four years until banned by the Emperor Theodosius I in A.D. 394. The last Games were, according to this opinion, in A.D. 393. The Games were, supposedly, the 293rd, and had continued for 1168 years. Next year, in Munich, we will be celebrating only the 20th modern Olympic Games, which have existed for some 75 years. Many historians believe that the Ancient Games started earlier and finished later, but for the purposes of this paper this will not be debated. The events of the Ancient Games over the time period cited varied. In 776 B.C., for example, only the stade race was run, and events were added as the years went on. However a certain pattern emerged, and this one will be developed. Again, there are differences of opinion on this subject. The opinion of Drees has been relied on, in the main, though even he admits that the reconstruction can only be considered, a "more or less satisfactory sequence"
