Olympia
The most common question asked about the 2004 Olympics is "Do you think Greece can pull it off?"
That's a tough question. Those with a cynical attitude towards the Greeks and their laid-back attitudes about life believe that it is impossible and the Olympics in Athens will be a disaster if they even materialize. They point to the chaos of modern Athens and what they describe as Byzantine politics and an Olympic commitee whose main agenda seemed to be the drapes in their offices instead of construction that was falling dangerously behind schedule. Some point to Salt Lake City and the scandals there and say "If the religious state of Utah can be corrupted by the money that the winter Olympics can bring in, what about Greece, where large sums of EEC money for social and infrastructure improvements end up in Swiss bank accounts and polititians and officials first order of business is to make sure they are financially secure before they worry about the needs of their constituents." But I believe the Olympics can be pulled off because I think the country is changing. I think the Greek attitude towards corruption and incompetance is being altered by the scrutiny Greece is receiving because of incidents in the last couple years. The anti-NATO demonstrations, the Clinton Riots and the sinking of the ferry boat Samina have made many Greeks realize that a handfull of idiots are making the whole country look like jerks. Because of this the Greeks are determined to pull off these Olympics and prove to the world and themselves that they are not one step away from being Third World, but they are a serious partner of the larger countries who are forging the future. They completed the Metro (almost), and even if they did forget to put in air-conditioning they have proven that some things can get (almost)done in Greece.

Terrorism
Terrorism has also darkened the Olympic ideal at several different Games. In the midst of the 1972 Munich Games, the Olympic movement experienced its most tragic hour. A band of Palestinian terrorists made their way into the Olympic village (where most athletes live during the Games), murdered two members of the Israeli team, and took nine hostages. When the IOC, meeting in emergency session, learned that a gunfight had broken out and that all nine hostages were dead, along with five of the terrorists, the Games were suspended for a day. The IOC’s controversial decision to resume the Games that year was endorsed by the Israeli government. Another violent incident occurred at the Atlanta Games in 1996. During the Games a pipe bomb exploded in the city’s Centennial Olympic Park, killing one person and injuring more than 100 others. The person or group responsible for the bombing was never discovered.

Geography of the Olympic Games
Dateline: 09/21/00 Although "over 200" countries are attending and participating in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, there are only 192 true countries on earth. So how are there 200 or more Olympic participants? The International Olympic Committee (IOC) says it best Although most National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are from nations, the IOC also recognises independent territories, commonwealths, protectorates and geographical areas. Of the 192 countries on earth , three ( Kiribati Marshall Islands , and the Vatican City ) have no NOCs, which ensure that athletes from their respective nations attend the Olympic Games, so they won't be participating in Sydney. That results in 189 true countries with NOCs. Add to that the twelve territories, commonwealths, and protectorates that have NOCs and can thus participate in the Olympics: American Samoa (U.S.), Aruba (Netherlands), Bermuda (U.K.), British Virgin Islands (U.K.), Cayman Islands (U.K.), Cook Islands (New Zealand), Guam (U.S.), Hong Kong (China), Netherlands Antilles (Netherlands), Palestine, Puerto Rico (U.S.), and the Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Adam van Koeverden to Carry Flag for Canada at Closing Ceremony

COC Expresses Pride in Athletes, Looks to Future Following 12-Medal Performance
ATHENS, August 29, 2004 – The Canadian team ended the 28th Olympic Games in Athens with a total of 12 medals – three gold, six silver and three bronze – placing Canada 19th in the overall medal count by country. The Canadian team won two fewer medals in Athens than it did four years ago in Sydney but Canadian athletes achieved the highest success rate ever in terms of top 12 finishes, with 79 per cent of Canadian athletes placing in the top 12 in their event at these Games.
At the Canadian Olympic Committee’s closing press conference earlier today in Athens, Chef de Mission David Bedford announced that double Olympic medallist, kayaker Adam van Koeverden, will be Canada’s flagbearer at the closing ceremony this evening.
"I’m thrilled to be the flagbearer for the Canadian team," said van Koeverden. "It’s really an honour to lead the team into the stadium. I wasn’t able to go to the opening ceremony because we were training in France at the time, so this makes up for it in a way that I could never imagine."
"It was a tremendous honour to be have been Chef de Mission of this fantastic team of athletes at these historic Games in Athens," said Bedford. "The theme of our mission here in Athens was Our Day in History and I am proud that so many of our athletes created their own piece of history during these Games."

Attended by representatives from 23 countries, comprising 2035 competitors, of which 36 were women Rome had originally been selected to host the 1908 Olympics, but the Italian organizers withdrew after a 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius created havoc in the country. The IOC asked the British Olympic Association to take over. In many respects, it was the ideal solution. England had much more collective experience in organizing large sports events than any other country, with the Henley Royal Regatta, the All-England (Wimbledon) tennis tournament, and the 30-year-old Amateur Athletic Association's national track and field championships.
The English organizers did bring considerably more order to the Olympics, primarily by limiting the number of athletes that could represent any one country in a given event. But the 1908 Games were the first to be marred by international politics and controversy over judging

The Olympic Movement Olympic Issues In the Ancient Olympic Games, women were forbidden to take part. Married women were forbidden to even enter the competition areas as spectators. If they were caught, the punishment was death. Therefore, they created their own Games dedicated to the goddess Hera. Hera was the sister-wife of Zeus. The Olympic Games were dedicated to Zeus. When the Olympic Games were revived in 1896 even the founder himself, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, did not agree with women's participation in the Games. This issue was the topic of much debate between the initial members of the IOC. However, women did not take part in the Games until 1900 in Paris. It was here that Britain's Charlotte Cooper became the first female gold medallist in the tennis singles competition. Only one other sport saw women's participation in 1900, golf. In London at the 1908 Games there were 36 women competitors in the figure skating and tennis events. After these Games and a recommendation from the British Olympic Association that women swimmers, divers and gymnasts be allowed to compete in future Games, the Swedish Organising Committee included two swimming events and one diving contest for women at the 1912 Stockholm Games. Finally, in 1924 the IOC decided to allow a larger participation of women in the Games. However, there was little evidence of this even by the 1936 Games in Berlin where there were only four sports available to women.

Eco Assistance Also Offered to Cities Bidding for 2012 Games
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed today in the Olympic Tennis Centre in the Greek capital between the Organizing Committee for the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games (ATHOC) and UNEP.
UNEP also announced that it was establishing contact with the five cities short-listed for the Summer Olympic Games of 2012 to discuss how the environment can feature high in their proposals.
UNEP and ATHOC will also develop and implement jointly two public awareness and educational campaigns, one on waste management and anti-littering and the other on water conservation.
In a letter to Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Toepfer however recognized that much more needed to be done to ensure that the environment is even more central in future Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, UNEP has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Turin 2006 Olympic Winter Games Organizers (TOROC).
