The earliest figurine discovered to date originated somewhere between 500,000 and 300,000 BC, during the Middle Acheulean period. Discovered in Morocco , it is about 6 centimeters long. Evidence suggests that this Moroccan piece may have been created by natural geological processes with a minimum of human tool -work, but the piece bears evidence of having been painted; "a greasy substance" on the stone's surface has been shown to contain iron and manganese and indicates that it was decorated by someone and used as a figurine, regardless of how it may have been formed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3047383.stm

At the time of the Trojan wars, five hundred years before Rome was founded, the Olmec built great cities with pyramids and ball courts. Olmec objects were traded all over Mexico, even as far as Guatemala. Considered by most archaeologists to be the 'mother culture' of Mexico, the roots of the later Maya and Aztec cultures lie with the Olmec. One of the most extraordinary feats of the ancient Olmec was their monumental sculptures. The inhabitants of the site of La Venta erected huge sculptures, some of which weighed up to 40 tonnes. The most famous of these are the massive stone heads. Believed to be portraits of their leaders, they are over two metres high and sculpted entirely without the help of metal tools. There are thousands of tonnes of stones at the site but, most extraordinarily of all, these sculptures are found in an area where there is no rock available. The area identified as the source of the Olmec boulders lies in the Tuxtla mountains over 160 kilometres away. And between these mountains and La Venta the land is criss-crossed with massive rivers and swamps which would have made the transportation even more difficult. So how did the stones get to La Venta?

History
The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatán around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tools. They were also skilled farmers, clearing large sections of tropical rain forest and, where groundwater was scarce, building sizeable underground reservoirs for the storage of rainwater. The Maya were equally skilled as weavers and potters, and cleared routes through jungles and swamps to foster extensive trade networks with distant peoples.
Around 300 B.C., the Maya adopted a hierarchical system of government with rule by nobles and kings. This civilization developed into highly structured kingdoms during the Classic period, A.D. 200-900. Their society consisted of many independent states, each with a rural farming community and large urban sites built around ceremonial centres. It started to decline around A.D. 900 when - for reasons which are still largely a mystery - the southern Maya abandoned their cities. When the northern Maya were integrated into the Toltec society by A.D. 1200, the Maya dynasty finally came to a close, although some peripheral centres continued to thrive until the Spanish Conquest in the early sixteenth century.

The story of the Maya begins during the Fourth Ice Age about 60,000 years ago. At this time the earth's ice caps were much larger than today, glaciers extended as far south as the central United States and no tropical climate existed anywhere on our planet. The so-called tropics were covered with savannah and grassland. So much water was trapped in the ice caps that the level of the sea was lower than today and a land bridge about 1,000 miles wide connecting Asia and North America at the Bering Strait was exposed. The first humans to inhabit the Americas came across this land bridge. At first, travel south was impeded by vast walls of ice but gradually, as the ice melted, people began to spread south. It is believed the first humans reached Central America about 15,000 years ago. The first identifiable culture, Clovis, existed around 10,000 BC. Some stone tools dating back to 9,000 BC have been found in Guatemala. Around this time, the Fourth Ice Age was drawing to a close and the climate was gradually warming up enabling humans to begin eating more plants and less meat. This change was underway around 8,000 BC.

About the Book
The book, Susu Economics: The History of Pan-African (Black) Trade, Commerce, Money and Wealth is one of the most thorough and exciting books which deals with the development of culture and civilization in ancient and prehistoric Africa, and how trade and commerce contributed to the migrations of Africans worldwide and the establishment of cultures and civilizations from the Sahara to India and China, around the globe to ancient Olmec Mexico. This massive trade network contributed to building the wealth and influence of many ancient African kingdoms and empires such as ancient Egypt, Nubia-Kush, Wagadu-Ghana, Nok, Punt, Zimbabwe and many others. African wealth and influence also spread to parts of Europe when Africans settled parts of Ireland and England as well as Iberia, hundreds of years before Christ. The book examines the trade goods used and commodities traded for thousands of years.
About the Author
Paul Alfred Barton is a direct descendant of Gyorgis, an Ethiopian Lady of royal background who migrated from Gondar, Ethiopia to the Caribbean during the 1830's. Barton is also the descendant of a Black Carib (Garifuna) great grandfather. About the Book
The book, A History of the African-Olmecs and Black Civilizations of America F rom Prehistoric Times to the Present Era , is one of the most fascinating, well-researched and well-written books on the subject of the Black and Black African presence in prehistoric and ancient Americas. This book deals with the current and past findings on the ancient African-Americas nations (throughout the Americas). It also studies present-day descendants of these ancient Africans and places attention on the ancient transatlantic as well as the transpacific ocean route by boat. The book discusses the plight of the Black Washitaw Nation of Louisiana and the South, who lost much of their ancient kingdom during the Louisiana Purchase. The plight of California’s Black Californians, the Black Jamassee of Georgia, and the Black Caribs (Garifuna) of the Caribbean is examined. The great black civilization of the Olmecs and their connection in terms of language, religion, race, and culture with the West Africans is discussed.

    National Geographic Today

July 17, 2002 Analysis of residue from a ceramic "teapot" suggests that the Maya, and their ancestors, may have been gobbling chocolate as far back as 2,600 years ago, pushing back the earliest evidence of cacao use more than 1,000 years. "This reopens the whole debate about who first invented chocolate," said Jonathan Haas, curator of the mouthwatering "Chocolate" exhibition at the Field Museum in Chicago. The True History of Chocolate, believes based on a slew of evidence, some linguistic, that the roots of chocolate go much further back to the great Olmec civilization, which preceded the Maya. Chocolate is made from the seeds of the cacao tree, which are swaddled in gooey white flesh inside green-yellow pods. The seeds and the pulp are scooped out of the pod and allowed to ferment until the seeds are a rich dark brown. The seeds are then dried, and then roasted before being ground to produce a thick chocolate paste. Chocolate for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
