Two of the students each will receive $50,000 college scholarships. All others will get $1,000 scholarships. The two top winners will be announced at a Free Spirit ceremony at the National Press Club on March 24.
The scholarship winners will be brought here to receive their awards and participate in a journalism conference which culminates with attendance at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year Award ceremony. At the event, students will have the opportunity to meet the 2003 Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year, Greg Mortenson, a Montana humanitarian who has dedicated his life to establishing schools in Central Asia.
The program, funded by the Freedom Forum, began in 1999 to honor Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The scholarships and conference program are designed to assist students who are pursuing journalism careers and to inspire them through conference sessions with prominent media professionals. The Close Up Foundation assists the Freedom Forum in administering the program.
"We want to encourage these young people to become free-spirited journalists who dream, dare and do," Neuharth said.

Carver Middle School Curriculum
The middle school structure encompasses sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. At each grade level, students are enrolled in four courses in the core curriculum areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Students are expected to achieve satisfactory thinking skills, inquiry, creativity, and independent practice.
Class Schedule
On Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays classes meet for forty-five minutes. On Wednesdays and Thursdays classes meet for ninety minutes. Core 2, Core 4, and Core 7 classes meet on Wednesdays, and Core 1, Core 3, and Core 6 classes meet on Thursdays. The goal for extending time is to enhance learning. Additional time allows for a variety of instructional techniques and active learning activities that require higher order thinking skills, inquiry, creativity, and independent practice.
Wildcat Time
Wildcat Time is not an academic course. It is a period that provides opportunity for a variety of activities to encourage a sense of belonging and build relationships between a teacher and a student or a group of students. It promotes self-esteem self, and group awareness, decision making and interpersonal skills.

Bringing Oklahoma Food to Oklahoma Schools
by Maura McDermott Two groundbreaking publications The Oklahoma Farm-to-School Report and The Oklahoma Food Connection: A Directory of Agricultural Producers, Crops, and Institutional Buyers Oklahoma Food Policy Council For its first project, the group examined the potential for increased use of locally grown foods by public institutions, especially public schools. The council was acting on the belief that serving fresh, locally grown foods would not only improve the quality and the nutritional value of the meals served by these institutions, but would also bring increased opportunities and profitability to farmers interested in this market. The first step in the project was to learn the buying habits of institutional food service directors in the state. The council, assisted by Barry Bloyd and his staff from the Agricultural Statistics Service and Dr. Kathleen Kelsey of Oklahoma State University, with coordination by council co-chair Jim Horne and Kerr Center staff, devised and mailed a 30-question survey to 638 institutions in Oklahoma: public schools, colleges and universities, correctional centers, state hospitals, technology centers and state resorts. The response to this survey was very good, nearly 67%. While it is clear from the responses given that currently not much Oklahoma-grown food is served by these institutions, many have a high level of interest in buying it.

DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS PROGRESS

Education in Oklahoma City is very different from the time when parents' only option was to send their child to the school assigned through an attendance plan. Today, Oklahoma City Public Schools offers parents a choice in the style of education their child receives. Who better to decide a child's educational path than the people who know the child best.
Parents can choose the school closest to their home, or they can choose a school that uses an emphasis or theme to excite children's interest in school. They can also choose a school where parents and community leaders map the students' curriculum and activities. Each of these choices gives students a unique educational experience and the opportunity to succeed.
OCPS believes the success of our students includes the involvement of parents and the community. These different choices provide new responsibilities and challenges that excite both students and parents.
Attendance Zone Schools
Attendance Zone Schools are comprised of students who reside in a particular area and these schools are typically the closest to a student's home. The quality education is based on the traditional model, with a focus on core subjects and giving the students a well-rounded education. There are 74 Attendance Zone Schools around the district.
