Case Study: Indians, Outlaws and Angie Debo
By Barbara Abrash, Center for Media, Culture and History, New York University Overview
The making and distribution of Indians, Outlaws and Angie Debo shows how a network of feminist activists and scholars working with public-spirited citizens in New York and Oklahoma brought the dramatic story of an important but little-known writer of American Indian history to national public television audiences. It demonstrates how the telling of little-known stories that enrich our view of American history can be enabled by a vital web of cultural activists and public institutions. Indians, Outlaws and Angie Debo American Experience , and was distributed from 1989 to 2003 by PBS Video. This report traces the reciprocal relationship between a network of individuals, public organizations and civic groups - and the consequences for the long term life of the film. Background
In 1983, Glenna Matthews and Gloria Valencia-Weber, feminist faculty members at Oklahoma State University, approached me about making a documentary film about Angie Debo. WOSU-FM, the Oklahoma State University NPR station, had broadcast a series of their oral histories with Debo, who was then in her 90s, and they wanted to take their project further. Given her age, time was obviously of the essence. At that time, I was head of media projects at the Institute for Research in History in New York City, an organization of independent feminist historians (much like Debo), and it seemed a perfect fit. I brought in Martha Sandlin, a newly-minted NYU film school graduate originally from Oklahoma, and together we produced the film, which was directed by Sandlin.

COURTS/PENAL SYSTEM 80 The Judiciary 80.1 Supreme Court Terms We favor limiting the terms of state Supreme Court judges to a maximum of 16 years with mandatory retirement at 75 years of age. Judicial Review We recommend that the committee currently being considered to study the reformation of our current judicial system in Oklahoma should include at least one-third lay people in addition to attorneys, judges and legislators, to get a full scope opinion of our legal system. Judges We believe District and Associate District Judges should continue to be elected. Hold-Harmless Payments The state court system shall be required to continue to fund county government for so-called hold harmless payments to compensate for loss of revenue from justice of peace courts and county courts; also portion of utility and janitorial bills for court occupied areas. Make My Day Law We desire to see the "Make My Day" law expanded to allow easier access for permits to carry weapons, also providing extended protection to the victim. We should have the right to protect our property and lives without fear of prosecution. We endorse and request the continued firm enforcement of laws and ask for the right to use force to protect our private property, including deadly force if needed. Criminal Litigation We recommend setting limits on the rights of criminals presently incarcerated to litigate against the prison system.

ROBINA SUWOL, 25.07.2005 20:41 AB 405 California law allows pesticide products that do not have full registration and outstanding data requirements to be applied on school sites. This glaring oversight in the law may expose school children, teachers and other members of the public to unknown health risks. Pesticides contain toxic substances, many of which have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment and, in particular, have a developmental effect on children. Principal Larry Maxwell showed SDE staff the student art on display in the cafeteria. Finding physics teachers to meet course mandates in the new graduation requirements is a major concern because of the existing teacher shortage in science. Because of the new requirements, faculty felt their vo-tech program may be at risk when students are not able to fit such classes into an already packed schedule and that increased drop-outs could occur because of requiring more advanced courses. The day started with light refreshments for the road weary School Road Tour team (which left Oklahoma City at 6 a.m.) at Stigler Middle School At Stigler High School Stigler Elementary School serves nearly 1,300 students each day. Administrators were concerned with lack of sufficient funding to go to full-day kindergarten and to get computers connected to the Internet.
Poteau Public Schools: Next stop was lunch at Pansy Kidd Middle School with a welcome from the school band and Superintendent Dr. Bert Corr. Principal Lorraine Caldwell said that the school is losing one computer lab because of Y2K compliance problems but the school has passed a bond issue for $350,000 to replace these and add about 50 more. At the Upper Elementary School , Tour staff noted a particularly involved class of students studying Spanish. Faculty said their biggest concern is parental involvement and the fact that they are still utilizing portable buildings for classrooms. The
