Math and Science Education
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
This awards program is open to practicing public, private and parochial school teachers with a minimum of five years teaching experience. State finalists are chosen on the basis of their teaching performance, background and experience by a state selection committee. Application packets for each finalist are then forwarded for judging to the National Science Foundation. A national committee selects one math and one science teacher as the Oklahoma Presidential Awardees. The competition alternates each year between teachers of grades K-6 and teachers of grades 7-12. In 2006, teachers of grades K-6 will be eligible to apply for this award. The Awardees each receive an official notification from the White House, a $10,000 grant, and an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. For more information about this national awards program and to obtain a 2005 application, visit the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching website.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, Oklahoma City
The third parish in Oklahoma City was founded by decree of Bishop Meerschaert on January 16, 1919. Father Albert Monnot, then pastor of Hinton, was named to organize the parish that would cover 80 square miles to serve the northwest expansion of Oklahoma City. The origin of the parish's name is uncertain, but Bishop Meerschaert had great devotion to Mary under a similar title, Our Lady of Prompt Succour. The first Masses were celebrated in an automobile showroom on Classen Boulevard. In May a dozen men worked for two days to put up a temporary wooden church building, 30 by 60 feet, at Northwest 32nd Street and Lake Avenue, that the parish still occupies today. In June ground was broken for a permanent church-school building, and in September the school opened with classes taught by three Sisters of Mercy. The school offered 12 grades, and 90 children enrolled the first year. Within two years there were 180 students and seven faculty members.

The community of Wichita Falls sits in the northernmost part of Texas, with Oklahoma City and Dallas a two hour drive away. The city of 104,700 people borders the townships of Burkburnett and Iowa Park, that add another 17,000 people to the area. The City acts as the Gateway to Texas from the North and serves our great state with an official Visitor's Center. This center is responsible for informing over 200,000 travelers annually about the diversity of the Lone Star State. The City has enjoyed tremendous growth within recent years adding 2,200 new and newly renovated hotel/motel rooms. Sheppard Air Force Base provides training and facilities to almost 35,000 active duty, retiree and civilian personnel. Sheppard is the headquarters for the European NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program. This program is the only one of its kind in the world and trains our allies' most promising fighter pilots. The base also supports several technical training schools for U.S. military service members. Sheppard AFB is the largest employer in the area with 3,700 permanent party, an average of 5,700 students, and 4,041 civilian employees. The estimated impact of SAFB on local economy is $612 million annually. In addition, there are three American Legions and four Veterans of Foreign Wars posts within the community. The Municipal Airport is co-located with Sheppard's airfield.
