GIS tools organize, relate, analyze, and visualize data to help discover new meanings and insights and support important decisions. A GIS-based map can combine information that is found in hundreds of traditional maps. Data can be added with the click of a mouse, and new mixtures of data can be visualized on a screen or printed out.
What distinguishes GIS from other forms of information systems, such as databases and spreadsheets, is that GIS deals with information that is related on the basis of location, such as longitude and latitude or Global Positioning Satellite coordinates. GIS maps let users visualize this spatial information in ways not possible with spreadsheets, databases, or charts.
GIS has been traditionally confined to the computer screen or a printout of one or more map layers. Recently, Livermore GIS specialist Lee Neher and Web designer Marisa Price have been developing Web-based versions so researchers can access and manipulate data while working anywhere in the world. Geographic information systems (GIS) maps are composed of layers of geographically superimposed data. There is no limit to the number of layers that can be visualized. Such capabilities are particularly valuable to researchers working at the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center, located at Livermore. In the example above, the Geographic Information Sciences Center assembled layers of data about natural and human-made features, including geography, topography, demography, roads, railroads, surface water, and facilities.

The Preface contains general information on LC's collection and includes a list of other libraries with Sanborn holdings. The Introduction by Walter W. PREFACE
Tracing the development and growth of cities and towns has been a popular study in recent years. Fortunately for the researcher on such a quest, the cartographic collections of the Library of Congress contain thousands of maps and atlases of urban areas, dating from as far back as the sixteenth century up to the present. Of particular note among the Library's holdings is an extensive collection of maps of American cities and towns, giving detailed, accurate information about their buildings and other structures. The Sanborn Map Company of Pelham, New York, produced many such maps. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large-scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present and depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape, and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls, locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show the locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are thus an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American cities.

Sharing our Heritage Across the Globe Israel - Oklahoma Geography The state of Israel is very far away from Oklahoma. But as far away as Israel the land is, to the Jewish people, Israel is also a people as well as a country. As Jews we are united by our values, our heritage, our Torah. And we also are united by a bond to our homeland, Eretz Israel. In order to learn about and understand Israel, we need first to know where we live in relation to other places and those things about our own home that we want to know about Israel. Then we will proceed too study some of the same things about Israel. So here we go. Contents Credits Using this Workbook North America

    Migrations
When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed less than 8 percent of the African-American population lived in the Northeast or Midwest. Even by 1900, approximately 90 percent of all African- Americans still resided in the South. However, migration from the South has long been a significant feature of black history. An early exodus from the South occurred between 1879 and 1881, when about 60,000 African-Americans moved into Kansas and others settled in the Oklahoma Indian Territories in search of social and economic freedom. In the early decades of the twentieth century, movement of blacks to the North increased tremendously. The reasons for this "Great Migration," as it came to be called, are complex. Thousands of African-Americans left the South to escape sharecropping, worsening economic conditions, and the lynch mob. They sought higher wages, better homes, and political rights. Between 1940 and 1970 continued migration transformed the country's African-American population from a predominately southern, rural group to a northern, urban one. The movement of African-Americans within the United States continues today. Further research in the Library's general and special collections could help assess how migration affected social and economic changes in individual cities, towns, neighborhoods, and even families.

This website is provided by the Oklahoma Biological Survey to aid persons interested in the study and identification of the woody plants of Oklahoma. The information provided was developed with both the academic and amateur in mind. It is our hope that in doing so a broader audience will come to appreciate the richness and variety of the Oklahoma flora. There are approximately 2,400 plant species in Oklahoma (Taylor and Taylor 1994) and about 330 are trees, shrubs, or woody vines. For the purpose of this document, a woody plant is defined as a plant that retains some living woody material at or above ground level through the non-growing season (several species of small cacti fit this definition, but are not recognized trees or shrubs). Categorizing a woody plant as "tree", "shrub", or "vine" is often difficult and can appear arbitrary. Distinguishing between a tree and a shrub can be particularly difficult. That is why it is not unusual to see descriptions such as "small tree or large shrub." In this treatment we have adopted the following definitions: a tree is a woody plant that is at least 10 cm (4 in ) in diameter at 1.4 m (4.5 ft) above ground level; a shrub is less than 10 cm in diameter at 1.4 m above the ground and usually has multiple stems or is clonal; a woody vine does not stand upright without support but climbs on other vegetation or sprawls on the ground.

Digital Atlas of Oklahoma The 25 digital-map data sets, known as the Digital Atlas of Oklahoma, have been compiled to provide a set of basic statewide geographic data suitable for use with Geographic Information System (GIS) software. The collection of data sets, compiled in 1997, is intended to benefit people just learning to use GIS as well as experienced GIS users. Most of the data sets were developed from 1:100,000-scale maps (on which one inch equals about 1.6 miles) and provide a level of spatial detail convenient for users interested in geographic areas ranging from a few square miles to watersheds, counties, or the entire state. Statewide data provided includes county boundaries, U.S. Congressional districts, Oklahoma House and Senate districts, latitude and longitude lines, school district boundaries, stream gage locations and topographic quad map locations. Data provided for each county includes census geography and demographic data, contour lines and elevation points, geographic names, roads, school district boundaries, streams, and township and range information.
