Landownership atlases and indexes to land grants contributed to the early development of Oklahoma. This article will discuss the development of the early land grants to Indian citizens and four atlases or platbooks of landownership which were significant in the promotion and speculation of investment in eastern Oklahoma soon after it became a state. The five Civilized Tribes was a term used collectively to designate the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole tribes in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). This designation was applied to these Indians because of the advancement they had made toward civilized life and customs as opposed to the Plains Indians. These five tribes differed from most others in that their lands were held not on the same basis as a reservation, but by patents or deeds in fee simple, with certain restrictions as to alienation and reversions. By an Act of Congress, March 3, 1893, a commission was appointed to negotiate with the Five Tribes for the extinguishment of their tribal title to lands by allotment, and division of the same among the members of the tribes. This commission to the Five Civilized Tribes became known as the Dawes Commission, after Senator Henry L. Dawes, who was largely responsible for the legislation that brought it into being. their main task was to make an equitable division of nearly twenty million acres of land among more that 100,000 Indians. Several years of negotiation and pressure on the Indians were required to secure their assent to this proposal. Surveys and allotments were made to permit each Indian or Freedman to include their improvements in the allotment.

Maps of Colorado Links to Historical Maps of Colorado Congress created the Territory of Colorado in 1861 in the center of the western half of the continental United States in the east-central portion of the Rocky Mountain region. The center of the state is approximately 1,500 miles west of the Eastern coast of the United States, 800 miles east of the Western coast, 650 miles south of the northern border with Canada and 475 miles north of the southern border with Mexico. Colorado is bounded on the east by the states of Kansas and Nebraska, on the north by Nebraska and Wyoming, on the west by Utah and on the south by New Mexico and Oklahoma. The boundary lines create an almost perfect rectangle, measuring approxiamtely 387 miles from east to west and 276 miles from north to south and covering 104,247 square miles, including 450 square miles of bodies of water. Colorado is the eighth largest state when measured in square miles area. Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies gradually rising westward to the front range foothills and the higher ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The Continental Divide runs from north to south through west central Colorado and bisects the state into the eastern and western slopes. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins.

    http://www.unc.edu/depts/geog/depts/northam-map.html
Interactive Map of Geography Departments in the United States and Canada
NOTE: The geography folks at Oklahoma State have put a similar map on the web, at http://www.ocgi.okstate.edu/geogdept.htm . I encourage you to check it out. For one thing, it's department data are more up to date than mine. It also will give you additional data layers, such as highways, counties, and urban areas, when you zoom in. However, it is slower to use unless you have broadband, and I had problems several times with the tool buttons not showing up after a zoom or refresh. Oklahoma State's map was made with Internet Map Server technology (ArcIMS). When I started my map, this technology was not available; I made mine by making smart maps, turning them into dumb graphics, making image maps out of the dumb graphics, and then making html pages to put them in. This is one of the reasons I haven't updated the map very oftenit is a cumbersome process. However, after looking at OK State's map, I think there is still a place for mine on the web, so I am working, off and on, on a major update, which I hope to have completed before the end of summer 2005. Many of the links are out of date and others need to be added. I also want to add institutions that offer Associate degrees in geography or geographic technology, and to include Mexico. To those of you who have been faithfully emailing me with corrections and additions, my thanks for your patience and apologies for the long delay.

Welcome to the Oklahoma Center for Geospatial Information (OCGI). This site public service and research project of the Department of Geography at Oklahoma State University (OSU) with the collaboration and support of Strategic Consulting International (SCI) of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The metadata available from OCGI can be searched through the FGDC/NSDI Clearinghouse , and the website is a member of and indexed on The Geography Network and the GeoData.gov Clearinghouse OCGI is currently hosting websites for the Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative (OWPI), the Oklahoma Renewable Energy Consortium (OREC), the OSU Botanical Garden , and an interactive map site of all academic Geography Departments in North America . We will soon be adding websites for the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office and the Oklahoma Transportation Center (OTC). In addition to the websites mentioned above, OCGI hosts ArcIMS Mapservices for base maps of Oklahoma providing a comprehensive and standardized set of base layers for use by any ArcGIS 8.x user without downloading actual datasets to the workstation. The site also offers downloadable shapefiles for users who prefer to retrieve data to their workstation for most of the layers available in the ArcIMS Mapservices. The downloadable data is currently available on a statewide basis for all of Oklahoma. OCGI is also now providing (in BETA form) a map based retrieval function for downloading DOQQ and DRG images and worldfiles, as well as customized areal download of many of the vector based datasets offered as statewide shapefiles or in the Mapservices. We plan to further develop the user interface and display characteristics of this function over the upcoming weeks in order to make the site more user friendly and “what you see is what you get”.
