Several Oklahoma libraries were damaged by a series of tornadoes that swept through the state leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. The Choctaw Library, a member of the Metropolitan Library System, reports that its lost its roof and roughly half its collection, when the storms touched down in Oklahoma County. "By the following morning, water was several inches deep in the 2,798 square-foot storefront library, and library staff and volunteers were wading through it to cart off soaked books, videos, and computer equipment" a library staffer said. Choctaw has a collection of 30,000 items valued at approximately $300,000. Computer hardware includes five PCs with as many printers along with communications gear. Exact value of the materials and equipment damaged was not availableat press time.

University of Oklahoma Libraries Preserve the Published History of Science
by Stephen C. Wagner One of the world's outstanding resources for published materials in the history of science is found at the University of Oklahoma. The History of Science Collections at the University Libraries document the published history of the natural sciences from the inception of printing to the present. The Collections are especially strong in the early modern period (15th through 18th centuries), with a focus on the physical, mathematical, and natural history sciences. The Collections began in 1949 with the initial donation of 129 rare books by Everette Lee DeGolyer, an oilman, geophysicist, amateur historian, and avid book collector. The condition of this gift was that the University of Oklahoma also develop a history of science program. In 1954, Duane H.D. Roller came to the University as Professor of History and Curator of the Collections. Over four decades Roller built up the holdings, which have now reached 84,000 volumes. In 1971 the current Department of the History of Science was created. The Collections' purposes are to identify, collect, preserve, and make accessible the published record of the history of science for research and teaching. Materials are continuously added to all components of the library: rare books, scientific periodicals, recent scientific works (through gifts and transfer of items from the science libraries), history of science monographs and periodicals, reference works, and microfilm collections of manuscript materials.

Oklahoma libraries starting to cave?
Despite initially indicating that she wouldn't cave to her state's recently passed "non-binding resolution" to segregate gay-themed children's books, Tulsa City-County Library CEO Linda Saferite told local reporters yesterday that the diversity-encouraging books have been moved to a special "Parenting Collection" section. Rumor has it that entry into the "Parenting Collection" section requires one to declare themselves devoid of morals, and to wear the word "fag lover" upon their bosom. Oh, and it's housed in a gas chamber. But once you get passed all that, the copy of " Heather Has Two Mommies " is all yours! The Tulsa City-County Library Has Moved A Controversial Children's Book To Its Parenting Collection [KOTV.com] **UPDATE Local reports indicate that the librarians are being pressured by some state Representatives, who have threatened to kill a bill that would give libraries more money unless they remove the queer-friendly kiddie lit. Drunk with power, they are. RELATED Oklahoma lawmakers: Oh, the Queers You'll Stigmatize

Know the library policies. Class Reserves
At the request of Shawnee center faculty, Roberts Library places materials on reserve at OBU's Mabee Learning Center circulation desk. Southwestern has also begun to build a core collection of basic materials. These items may be borrowed for one week at a time (or longer at the instructor's discretion). House OKs restriction on gay-themed books By Michael McNutt
    The Oklahoman
The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Monday to urge library officials to restrict children's access to books with homosexual themes. House Resolution 1039, by state Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, calls on Oklahoma libraries to "confine homosexually themed books and other age-inappropriate material to areas exclusively for adult access and distribution." It passed, 81-3. Kern said she wanted to make public libraries aware of the "values that our state upholds" and make sure books are on the shelves "where they appropriately need to be." "There are a lot of books that children shouldn't be reading," Kern said. "This isn't censorship, because I'm not asking that they be thrown away, be burned. I'm asking that they just be put in with adult collections and then if a parent wants their child to see a book like that they can check it out," she said.
