State Computer Harassment or "Cyberstalking" Laws
Law enforcement agencies estimate that electronic communications are a factor in from 20 percent to 40 percent of all stalking cases. Forty-four states now have laws that explicitly include electronic forms of communication within stalking or harassment laws. State laws that do not include specific references to electronic communication may still apply to those who threaten or harass others online, but specific language can make the laws easier to enforce. Two reports from the U.S. Department of Justice provide detailed information on cyberstalking: Stalking and Domestic Violence: Report to Congress (May 2001) and Cyberstalking: A New Challenge for Law Enforcement and Industry (Aug. 1999). CyberAge Stalking , from LLRX.com , discusses the prevalence of cyberstalking and outlines state and federal statutes and case law. It also provides resources and information about how to protect against this crime. Cyberstalking: Navigating a Maze of Laws , (New York Law Journal, July 2002) describes various statutory definitions and provisions in several state cyberstalking laws.

In science, the word law refers to a statement that describes regular or patterned relationships among observable phenomena (see physical law ). Laws of logic and mathematics describe the nature of rational thought . Laws of economics and psychology describe the nature of human behavior and interaction. Many adages are popularly known as "laws"; such as Murphy's law This article is concerned with laws of politics and jurisprudence : rules of conduct which mandate and/or proscribe specified relationships among people and organizations ; as well as punishments for those who do not follow the established rules of conduct. In ethics and moral philosophy this type of law is often called a "human legal code " to distinguish it from more fundamental laws applicable to all beings ( metaphysics ontology ). Such a body of laws can be seen as a legally-enforced ethical code or as a "secular moral code " (to the degree that political leaders replace religious leaders as moral examples ). Because lawyers and jurists more than other professions are self-regulating, almost by definition, they are often held to higher standards of behaviour or at least a stricter

    Emancipation in the United States
Emancipation is not available in every state in the United States. Where it is available, emancipation is a legal process by which minors can attain legal adulthood before reaching the age at which they would normally be considered adults (this is called the "age of majority"). The rights granted to legally emancipated minors might include the ability to sign legally binding contracts, own property, and keep one's own earnings. However, each state has different laws governing emancipation and some states simply have no law or legal process concerning emancipation. In states where minors wishing to become legally emancipated will have to break new legal ground. This page is designed to give minors information on the laws and available legal processes regulating emancipation in their state. The information is based on available state legal statutes and in some cases also includes information obtained from various legal aid organizations in that state. Some states have different legal terms for emancipation and can also differ in their definition of the rights granted to an emancipated minor.
