Education in Oklahoma City is very different from the time when parents' only option was to send their child to the school assigned through an attendance plan. Today, Oklahoma City Public Schools offers parents a choice in the style of education their child receives. Who better to decide a child's educational path than the people who know the child best.
Parents can choose the school closest to their home, or they can choose a school that uses an emphasis or theme to excite children's interest in school. They can also choose a school where parents and community leaders map the students' curriculum and activities. Each of these choices gives students a unique educational experience and the opportunity to succeed.
OCPS believes the success of our students includes the involvement of parents and the community. These different choices provide new responsibilities and challenges that excite both students and parents.
Attendance Zone Schools
Attendance Zone Schools are comprised of students who reside in a particular area and these schools are typically the closest to a student's home. The quality education is based on the traditional model, with a focus on core subjects and giving the students a well-rounded education. There are 74 Attendance Zone Schools around the district.

Western Heights Public Schools is a small independent school district located on the southwest side of Oklahoma City. Our 3,000 students are housed in four elementary (PK-5) buildings, one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12). The District is small enough for us to know our students and large enough to provide exciting opportunities for the staff and students. For example, Western Heights has implemented a tremendous technology initiative. Teachers, parents, and administrators operate on a continual school improvement process. Site level teams identify indicators of student success and areas which need attention. Plans are continually monitored and revised to correspond to student needs. Western Heights provides accelerated classes, honors classes, remedial classes, an inclusive special education environment, alternative school, School to Work initiatives, ROTC, athletics, and a variety of clubs and after school activities. The district is well known throughout the State of Oklahoma for its outstanding vocal and instrumental music programs. Athletes compete annually on the state level.

We currently have 31 students from affected areas enrolled in our school district, and our Eastlake Elementary School has hired one teacher from the New Orleans area. Students and staff have not only assisted with the displaced families in our school district, but have also donated many items for the relief effort. Sky Ranch Elementary collected money for the Red Cross relief effort. Counselor Barbara Shelton said that the students were very interested in how they could help. The 500 students at Sky Ranch collected $400 in the first two days of their drive. One third grade student donated her tooth fairy money and another student worked extra chores at home to earn money. Preparing Oklahoma Students for the Future
The Challenge: Oklahoma students were graduating from high school without the skills they needed to succeed in college. There were also achievement gaps between racial/ethnic minority groups and Caucasian students in the state's K-12 schools.
The Solution:
A combination of higher college admission standards and ACT's Educational Planning and Assessment System (EPAS
Why EPAS?
It is the only assessment system in Oklahoma that measures student readiness along a continuum of college readiness benchmarks. In addition, the data, guidance, and feedback provided by EPAS are useful to students, parents, and teachers.
The Results:
College remediation rates have dropped in all content areas and gaps between and among demographic subgroups have narrowed. The Challenge In the early 1990s, Oklahoma high school students were graduating largely without the skills necessary to succeed in college. College remediation rates exceeded 60 percent in some areas, and the majority of high school graduates were unprepared for the rigor of entry-level college courses. In addition, wide achievement gaps existed between racial/ethnic minority groups and Caucasian students in the state's K-12 schools. The Solution The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education sought to help K-12 students better prepare for college and work, as well as to narrow the achievement gaps that existed in K-12 schools in the state.

Solicitation of Input regarding SB 982 As you know, Senate Bill 982 created the Achieving Classroom Excellence (ACE) Act of 2005. A requirement of the Act is creation of the ACE Task Force (Section 4), which relates to other provisions of the ACE Act (Sections 5-6). They are: (Section 5) Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, public school students shall demonstrate mastery of the state academic content standards in reading and mathematics by the end of the student’s eighth-grade year. Mastery shall be demonstrated by attaining a satisfactory or advanced score on the eighth-grade criterion-referenced tests in reading and mathematics. Students who do not score satisfactory shall be provided remediation. The ACE Task Force’s purpose in law is to “study the testing requirements for eighth-grade students and high school students” established in SB 982. “The Task Force shall study, hold public hearings, and make recommendations regarding eighth grade and high school students on:
