Oklahoma's History Although one of the youngest states in the nation, Oklahoma is a land that reaches far back in time. Oklahoma's recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through the area on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." The land that would eventually be known as Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase Beginning in the 1820s, the Five Civilized Tribes from the southeastern United States were relocated to Indian Territory over numerous routes, the most famous being the Cherokee "Trail of Tears." "Boomers," who wanted the rich lands opened to non-Indian settlement. The government decided to open the western parts of the territory to settlers by holding a total of six land runs between 1889 and 1895. Settlers came from across the nation and even other countries like Poland, Germany, Ireland and Slavic nations to stake their claims. And African-Americans, some who were former slaves of Indians, took part in the runs or accepted their allotments as tribal members. In the years that followed, black pioneers founded and settled entire communities in or near Arcadia, Boley, Langston and Taft. On November 16, 1907, Oklahoma became the 46th state

Welcome to Oklahoma Route 66!
Every Route 66 state has its own unique sights and special contributions to the history and lore (or is that lure?) of Route 66. But only in Oklahoma do the elements of buildings, roadside attractions, people and history come together in such overwhelming abundance.
Interested in cool structures? We've got many that you'll recognize from coffee table books about Route 66: the Round Barn, the Blue Whale, the Coleman Theatre Beautiful, the Warehouse Market, the Meramec Caverns Barn, the Milk Bottle Building, Totem Pole Park, the Rock Café, and on and on and on. And for those who like to photograph or explore old ruins, we've got those too.
Love old bridges? We've got Pratt bedstead, camelback Warren pony truss, modified Pratt through-truss, a brick-decked bridge and more.
Want to travel back in time and journey on the actual pavement that took Okies and Arkies west during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years? We have a lot of original 2-lane concrete paving dating from the 1930s. Heck, we even have two stretches of 9-foot wide road that carried Route 66 traffic from 1926 till the mid-1930s!
Do you get your kicks exploring Museums? We have two fantastic Route 66 Museums and a host of wonderful county museums filled with enough interesting stuff to make your head spin.

Perry is proud of its past and in
remembrance of its beginning, celebrates the Cherokee
Strip Land Run every year as close to September 16 as possible.
This celebration is a major event and draws people in from all over
the area. Highlights include the county fair, parade, rodeo,
carnival, food and craft booths, and entertainment.
The bronze Cherokee Strip statue, titled "Hopes
and Dreams," sits on a massive granite pedestal in
front of the courthouse as a memorial to all the eager
settlers trying to claim a territorial homestead.
On September 16, 1893 at 12:00 noon, more than 100,000 land hungry pioneers raced for 40,000 claims available in the Cherokee Outlet Land Opening. The largest and most dramatic land run in Oklahoma ushered in an era of agriculture development. Promoters, enticing immigration to the Outlet "P", later named Noble County, promised the land to be some of the most productive in theTerritory. The first night in Perry was utter chaos with more than 25,000 people trying to make a claim at the land

Aline, Oklahoma
Our History The area has an Indian heritage stretching back into history, this part of the continent was claimed by Spain in the sixteenth century because of the explorations of DeSoto and Coronado, by France because of LaSalle's explorations and his claim of all territory drained by the Mississippi River, and by England because of explorations along the Atlantic coast. It was received by Spain as part of the Louisiana Territory through 1762-63 treaties. By secret treaty Spain, in 1800, was ready to cede the area to France, but the United States undertook negotiations which resulted in the Louisiana Purchase 1803. After the Civil War, the government held that the Indian treaties should be rewritten, in that some of the Indians had fought against the Union. As a result, the Five Civilized Tribes agreed, in 1866, that other Indians should be settled in the western half of the Indian Territory. Cattlemen soon gained access to this land, but farmers were forbidden to settle it. Those who entered were driven out by federal troops. Beef cattle by the thousands were driven from Texas up the Chisholm Trail to Kansas, and soon cattle leases covered the Cherokee Outlet. Agitation for opening the public lands increased. The "Boomers" talked up the idea, spreading information as to "Free LandFree Homes" throughout the nation. David L. Payne, Davy Crockett's cousin, and later, W. L. Couch, brought groups illegally into the territory in futile attempts to settle. Through cattlemen and Indians opposed, farmers and railroad companies persisted, and on March 2, 1889, as one of his last acts as president, Grover Cleveland signed the bill which provided for the gradual growth of Oklahoma Territory as negotiations with Indian tribes made more land available to settlers.

Oklahoma! Music: Richard Rodgers Based on Green Grow the Lilacs , a stage play by Lynn Riggs, Oklahoma! brought together for the first time composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The duo would go on to write nine Broadway musicals together, but none would be as important for the development of American musical theatre as Oklahoma! A milestone in its fusion of story, song and dance, the production even featured a dream ballet (choreographed by Agnes de Mille) which revealed the main characters hidden fears and desires. The plot is simple, revolving mainly around the question of who will take Laurey Williams to the box socialthe decent Curly McLain or the sinister Jud Fry. However, Oklahoma! continued in the tradition of Show Boat in its depiction of the pioneering men and women of the American Southwest. Oklahoma! opened at the St. James Theatre on March 31, 1943 and ran for 2,212 performances. The original cast featured Joan Roberts as Laurey Williams, Alfred Drake as Curly McLain and Howard Da Silva as Jud Fry. The 1955 film version featured Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones.

Community History
Saint Benedict and his twin sister Scholastica
, were born in 480 in Nurcia, Italy. As young adults, Scholastica remained at home and Benedict studied in Rome. Being disenfranchised with a tumultuous and decaying society, Benedict turned to a life of solitude in which to seek God. Eventually others found Benedict and asked that he guide them in their search for God.
Today, we also choose to put God at the center of our lives. We do this, living according to the Rule of Benedict , in a balanced life of prayer and work, community and solitude, hospitality and leisure.
Red Plains Monastery was founded on August 13, 1968 by a group of sisters from St. Joseph Monastery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are steeped in over 1,000 years of Benedictine tradition.
  • 500's - Saint Benedict established monasteries in Italy.
  • - Saint Walburga Abbey was founded in Eichstatt, Bavaria. It was from there that the first sisters came to America.

The Native American Heritage
Oklahoma's Native American population is the largest in the nation : 252,420 at the 1990 census. Several indigenous cultures existed in the area before the first European visited in 1541. Francisco Coronado almost certainly crossed Oklahoma in that year, and Hernando De Soto may have visited E Oklahoma. Later Juan de Onate passed through W Oklahoma, and some other Spanish explorers and traders and French traders from Louisiana visited the region, but there was no development of the area. Tribes of the Plains cultures : Osage, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache : dominated the west; the Wichita and other relatively sedentary tribes lived farther east. It is asserted that the first European trading post was established at Salina by the Chouteau family of St. Louis before the territory was transferred to the United States by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, but the land remained in control of the sparse and nomadic native population. For the most part only traders, official explorers (notably Stephen H. Long), and scientific and curious travelers (among them Washington Irving and George Catlin) came into the present-day state.

he following represents a simplified but researched overview of early Oklahoma NA, reaching back to the 1970s and 1980s when a handful of scattered addicts formed groups throughout the state and traveled long distances to support each other and to change that tired old lie Once an addict, always an addict. Addicts in Enid, Norman and Tulsa formed the first meetings that survived long enough to form a small service structure in the 1970s. These groups joined the Mid America Region, which included groups from Iowa, Nebraska,Kansas, and Missouri. Groups also soon formed in Oklahoma City, Lawton and Tahlequah and other parts of the state. The first known Shawnee meeting was established by Marg J. and Harlond P. about 1978 and held in a house a 502 N. Beard. The meeting did not survive and it would be seven more years before NA would make it Shawnee. Marg J. and Harlond P. are still clean today. The Oklahoma groups established the Joint Area Service Committee in 1980 and remained part of the Mid America Region. The old JASC comprised the Western and Eastern areas. Oklahoma was still not a region yet and NA members continued to drive long distances to support each others' meetings. About six to eight groups had formed in Oklahoma by 1980.

Clayton an anomaly in Oklahoma's history
WR's success runs in face of school's rush-oriented past
NORMAN, Okla. - With all its success through the years, Oklahoma never gained much of a reputation as a school that was going to beat teams with the passing game. Line up in the wishbone and ram the ball into the end zone? Sure. Run the option? No problem. But air it out? That just wasn't the Sooners' style. Maybe somebody forgot to let Mark Clayton know that. With a 20-yard catch last week against Oregon, Clayton claimed the school record for receptions, taking the top spot away from - what else - a running back. The senior already held the title as Oklahoma's career leader in receiving yards and touchdowns. AP, coaches' polls But Clayton isn't just reaching records in his final season. He's got room to put big numbers in the history books. Just don't count on him to tell you about it. Sure, Clayton is glad to mark his name in Oklahoma lore, but when the public address announcer was calling out his latest achievement, Clayton said he shrugged his shoulders and moved onto the next play.

History of the Italian Festival
The first Italian Festival in McAlester was held in 1971. It was the idea of Krebs restaurant owner Bill Prichard. He and his family have operated the "world famous" Pete's Place in Krebs for nearly 60 years. The festival was to honor and prolong the Italian heritage in this area of Oklahoma. The first four years, the festival was held around Columbus Day in McAlester Chadick Park. Food was prepared in the homes of the area residents and brought to the site for the one-day festival. In 1975, the festival became a two-day affair on Labor Day Weekend, and in 1977, it moved to Memorial Day Weekend, now its permanent annual setting. The festival was held for several years on a site commonly known as Schiller's Field, on the east side of U.S. 69 By-Pass, just south of the cloverleaf intersection with U.S. 270. In 1987, the festival moved to the new county fairgrounds (Pittsburg County Regional Exposition Center), just west of McAlester (on the south side of U.S. 270). The festival has grown into one of the largest festivals in the state, and features one of the largest arts and crafts shows in Oklahoma, as well as the delicious and freshly-prepared Italian food and tributes to Italian heritage. All the labor for the restival comes from volunteers. During the two-day event some twenty thousand people visit and enjoy, or take part in the festivities, which makes the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers all worthwhile.
