FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 26, 2005 NINETEEN PARTICIPATE IN HISTORY SUMMER INSTITUTE Nineteen teachers of Oklahoma history and other interested historians last week participated in a five-day summer institute titled “Northwest Oklahoma.” Dr. Deena Fisher, dean of Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Woodward campus, conducted the institute. Guest lecturers each day discussed the area’s prehistory, Indian culture, cowboy culture, ranching, farming, transportation and homesteading. The group made several field trips, including archeological sites, the Black Kettle Museum in Cheyenne, Fort Supply, Harvey House in Waynoka and the Sod House Museum near Aline. To complete the course, students made oral presentations, wrote book and article reviews and kept daily journals about what they learned from each session. Fisher said the goal of the institute was for participants to leave with a working knowledge of Oklahoma history, to gain an understanding of and appreciation for the heritage of Oklahoma and to have a better knowledge of resources to enhance the teaching of Oklahoma history. Participants included Kim Arnold, Doris Charmasson, Corley Nelson, Laura Paquette and Matthew Wren of Woodward; Sandra Billingsley of Austin, Texas; Katherine Chadbourne, Peggy Hager, John Martin and Mark Ray of Enid; Leo Conner and Naola Conner of Phoenix, Ariz.; Christa Evans of Cherokee; Kim Farber of Waukomis; Penny Heath of Watonga; April Miranda of Gage; Jerri Riggs of Laverne; Leslin Swinford of Fargo; and Cindy Vo of Mooreland.

In the next seven issues of the Newsletter, I am going to tell you a little about Oklahoma, specifically the Panhandle, aka No Man’s Land, the most western area being Cimarron County, home of the Black Mesa. As we get closer to Convention time, I will of course give you Convention specifics. I also want to introduce you to our committee members, so you will have some idea of who you are talking to when you spot one of us at the Convention. We will be wearing Co-host tee-shirts bearing the Convention logo and our name tags, and we will all welcome questions and suggestions—even criticism, if it’s nicely put………. First our committee: Many of you know Allan Griggs, who runs the Kenton Mercantile. Kenton is a fairly small town (population 35) near the Black Mesa. Kenton has many claims to fame in addition to Allan, for instance it is the only town in the state of Oklahoma that is in the Mountain Time Zone rather than the Central Time Zone. Allan will be on hand at the Merc almost non-stop during the Convention, as the Merc will be the registration site for the Convention, as well as the only place in the world to have one of Allan’s fine dinosaur burgers. If you haven’t yet met him, he will be featured in a 30-minute video that you can view at the site of the Highpointers Mercantile in the Swallow Falls State Park Campground at Convention Maryland – 2001.

There are several projects that the students will be involved in that will allow for various exposure to the many themes of this unit. There are focus activities that provide needed instruction for web publishing; as well as, general introduction to Oklahoma state history. The inquiry activities will involve the students in more research and analysis. The application activities will involve the students in the actual production of their final project. Assessment activities are built into the unit throughout all of the activities. (return to top)
    Final Project
Students will work in groups to create a web site covering several aspects of Oklahoma History. (return to top)
    Subject and Grade Levels
This unit has been created to help supplement the high school Oklahoma History curriculum. There are very few of us "Okies" that don't believe in the importance of knowing our colorful history, but materials are often hard to come by. This unit was an effort to create a compilation of materials as well as student activities to add a bit of zest to the standard curriculum. *** Most of these activities could be adapted to the elementary and middle school curriculum as well. (return to top)

    Time Frame
Most high schools offer Oklahoma History as a one-semester class. This unit has actually been designed to be utilized throughout the entire semester. The final project will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the availability of resources.

oklahoma s recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado The history of African Americans in oklahoma is a story unlike any to be found
    http://www.state.ok.us/osfdocs/stinfo2.html
OKLAHOMA'S HISTORY BEGINNINGS Oklahoma' s recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through the area on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." The land that would eventually be known as Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Beginning in the 1820s, the Five Civilized Tribes from the southeastern United States were relocated to Indian Territory over numerous routes, the most famous being the Cherokee "Trail of Tears." Forced off their ancestral lands by state and federal governments, the tribes suffered great hardships during the rigorous trips west. The survivors eventually recovered from the dislocation through hard work and communal support. Gradually, new institutions and cultural adaptations emerged and began a period of rapid development often called the "Golden Age" of Indian Territory. Following the destruction of the Civil War, Oklahoma became a part of the booming cattle industry, ushering in the era of the cowboy. Western expansion reached the territory in the late 1800s, sparking a controversy over the fate of the land. Treaties enacted after the Civil War by the U.S. government forced the tribes to give up their communal lands and accept individual property allotments to make way for expansion. There was talk of using Indian Territory for settlement by African Americans emancipated from slavery. However, the government relented to pressure, much of it coming from

OKLAHOMA STATE ICONS STATE FLAG The present Oklahoma State Flag adopted by the State Legislature in 1925, is Oklahoma's 14th flag. This shows a sky blue field with a central device: an Indian war shield of tan buckskin showing small crosses on the face the Indian design for stars and seven eagle feathers pendent for the edge of the shield. An Indian peace pipe (calumet) with a pipestone bowl and a tassel at the end of the pipestem lies on the shield; above the Indian peace pipe is an olive branch, the white man's emblem of peace. Underneath the shield or design in white letters is the word "Oklahoma." STATE SEAL STATE BIRD
Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher Muscivora forficata, is a somewhat quiet bird with beautiful plumage and a long sleek tail that is twice as long as its body. The deeply-forked tail resembles a pair of scissors. The Scissor Tailed Flycatcher has a black and white tail, a dark gray back, a light gray chest and head and has pale orange red coloring beneath its wings. STATE FLORAL
    EMBLEM
Mistletoe phoradendron serotinum the oldest of Oklahoma's symbols, adopted in 1893 14 years before statehood. Mistletoe grows on trees throughout the state and is particularly bountiful in the southern regions of Oklahoma. The dark green leaves and white berries show up brightly during the fall and winter in trees that have shed their own leaves.

    Oklahoma History
Before modern settlers and Indians came to Oklahoma, the land was occupied by hunter-agriculture peoples. Near Anadarko, archeologists discovered the bones of a mammoth and several spear points. They estimate the mammoth was killed more than 11,000 years ago. The spear point was identified as belonging to an ancient group of hunters called the Clovis culture. From 500 to 1300 AD, the Spiro Mound Builders lived in an area just west of the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. Items left in burial mounds show the Mound Builders to be skilled artists. Oklahoma's written history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through this area. At that time, it was the home of the Plains Indian tribes, such as the Osage, Kiowa, Apache and Comanche. In 1803, Oklahoma was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In the 1830s, the federal government forced the Five Civilized Tribes to leave their homelands. These tribes were living in the southeastern part of the U.S. They had to walk to Oklahoma over a trail that became known as the "Trail of Tears." Many men, women and children died during this long and treacherous trip. Once these people settled here, Oklahoma became Indian Territory. Many of the Indians sided with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. As punishment for this after the war, a series of treaties forced the Indian nations to give up the western half of the Indian Territory to the U.S. This area became home for other Indian tribes.
