Oklahoma in the 1930's The 1930's brought Oklahoma and the nation hard times, but the clouds of the Depression and Dustbowl had a golden lining..... Farmers and other industries were devastated by the Great Depression and the low economic status was made worse by the Dustbowl. By the end of the decade in 1939, Oklahoma had passed through many changes and had been shaped by the many recovery and relief projects enacted to counteract the effects of the twin emergencies. STATE SEAL OF OKLAHOMA Centered by a five-pointed star, each ray contains the seals of the Five Civilized Tribes. In the center of the star are an Indian and pioneer shaking hands under a figure holding balanced scales, representing Justice. The star is surrounded by 45 smaller stars representing the other states admitted to the U.S. before Oklahoma. Oklahoma's state seal has a dark blue background. The large center star is white, the smaller stars are gold and the ring around the edge of the seal is gold. The letters within it are dark blue.
STATE FLAG An Osage warrior's buckskin shield, decorated with pendant eagle feathers is the basic design. In crossed positions over the shield are an Indian peace pipe and an olive branch, the white man's symbol of peace. The flag is a rich sky blue. The word "Oklahoma" is white. The Osage war shield is tan, outlined in red, the peace pipe is white with red tips and the olive branch is green. O nce called Indian Territory because it was home to the five "civilized" tribes, Oklahoma was one of the last states to join the United States (1907). Oklahoma is situated in the southern edge of the Great Plains. Though most think of Oklahoma as being treeless and flat, this is far from the truth in many parts of the state. The area around Tulsa, located in northeastern Oklahoma, at the edge of the Ouachita Mountains with it's many scenic reservoirs and rolling hills, looks much like the Hill Country area of central Texas. Oklahoma has over 7 million acres of woodlands, so this cancels the rumor of the state being a treeless plain as well.

    The Native American Heritage
Coronado almost certainly crossed Oklahoma in that year, and Hernando De Soto may have visited E Oklahoma. Later Juan de passed through W Oklahoma, and some other Spanish explorers and traders and French traders from Louisiana visited the region, but there was no development of the area. Louisiana Purchase in 1803, but the land remained in control of the sparse and nomadic native population. For the most part only traders, official explorers (notably Stephen H. Long), and scientific and curious travelers (among them Washington Irving and George Catlin) came into the present-day state.
    Indian Territory
Indian Territory . Their tragic removal is known as the Trail of Tears. They settled on the hills and little prairies of the eastern section and built separate organized states and communities. The Cherokee particularly had a highly Europeanized culture, with a written language, invented by their great leader Sequoyah, and highly developed institutions. Some of the Cherokee were slaveholders and ran their agricultural properties in the traditional Southern plantation pattern; others were small farmers. The Five Civilized Tribes clashed briefly with the Plains Indians, particularly the Osage, but they were for a time free from white interference, and they were able to establish a civilization that strongly affected the whole history of the region.

29. Collinsville, Oklahoma History
History and information on Collinsville of Tulsa County, Oklahoma.
http://www.greatertulsa.com/collinsvilleok/history.html
n the beginning, sometime during 1897, settlers from all over began to gather forming a community due to the fertile prairie and huge coal beds beneath the earth. The new settlement, approximately a mile east of today's town site, was named after respected surveyor and engineer, Dr. A.H. Collins. He was persuaded to move his post office to the new town site from his allotment located two miles north by the folks' promise to name the town after him. The Collins Post Office was established on May 26, 1897, then the name was changed to Collinsville on June 16, 1898.
According to an article in Volume 1, No. 1, of the first Collinsville News issue, dated May 11, 1899: "In accordance with the court proceedings held at Muscogee, Indian Territory Northern District, on April 1, 1899, in which the petition for incorporation of the Town of Collinsville, Indian Territory, was granted, the same bearing Hon. Judge William Springer's signature."
The Old Town moved to it's present location shortly after the Santa Fe Railroad was built during the summer of 1899. Present day Collinsville is at the intersection of hwy169 and state highway 20, and is located from 97th East Avenue to 145th East Avenue, and 126th Street North to 166th Street North. Highway 75 is four miles west of downtown.

Oologah, Oklahoma History
Historic Oologah, the birthplace of The Cherokee Kid, known as America's Favorite Cherokee Cowboy, Will Rogers . Oologah is 30 minutes northeast of Tulsa on Highway 169 in northwest Rogers County. Oologah emerged as an Indian Territory coal mining boom town. It soon became a shipping point for coal mined in the area because of its location on the Iron Mountain and Southern railroad line.
In 1906, when Oologah was still a town in Indian Territory, the Bank of Oolagah was built due to the need for a safe depository and other general financial operations. It was one of the first banks in northeastern Oklahoma. The only bank in the area for over twenty years, and it existed as a commercial building for approximately eighty years.
Will Rogers said he told folks he was from Claremore because no one but an Indian could pronounce Oologah. The town's name is a Cherokee word meaning "dark cloud." Oologah (pronounced oo'-la-gawh) was also spelled Oolagah prior to Oklahoma 's statehood (1907) and still is at some historic buildings.
On August 12, 1995, the 60th anniversary of Will Rogers' tragic death, his son, Jimmy Rogers, and actor Ben Johnson from

Historic Facts and Overview
Francisco Vásquez de Coronado first explored the region for Spain in 1541. That same year, another Spaniard, Hernando DeSoto, explored the area. Both DeSoto and Coronado were in search of the legendary cities of gold that were believed to be located in that region.
In 1682 French explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle claimed all of the land drained by Mississippi River for France, including present-day Oklahoma. Soon after, French traders and trappers began to visit the region. In 1762, the land was ceded to Spain, but it was reclaimed by Napoleon for France in 1800 and sold to the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. For the most part, this region remained in control of the nomadic native populations. No white settlements developed, and only traders, explorers, and adventuresome travelers visited present-day Oklahoma.
The Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 established Oklahoma as the southwestern boundary of the United States. This Treaty also gave the Panhandle, the extreme northwestern portion of the present state, to Spain.

38. Oklahoma History - Establishment Of The Order Of Discalced Carmelites In Oklahom
History of the Carmelite Order located in Oklahoma.
http://www.oksister.com/oklahoma_history.htm
Home About Us Prayer Requests Carmelite Saints ... Donate Online Mission to the Immigrants: Establishment of the Order of Discalced Carmelites in Oklahoma By: Michael M. Smith; October 1981 1927 Souvenir Booklet The revolution which ousted Diaz in 1910, however, initiated another period of unbridled violence, xenophobia, and anti-clericalism. Throughout Mexico, revolutionaries desecrated churches, killed clergymen and nuns, and destroyed monasteries and convents. Once again the Carmelites were forced to flee the country or go into hiding. Throughout the violent stage of revolution, many Carmelites in Mexico returned to Spain, fled to Cuba, or sought safety in the United States. For the first four years of the conflict, the Discalced Carmelites in Torreon, Coahuila, had escaped the violence which rent other areas of the republic, and during the week before Easter, 1914, they quietly prepared for the forthcoming Holy Week solemnities. Four Spanish priests from the Province of Aragon-Valencia staffed the mission and church. The small community included Fr. Cirilio Corbat, the superior; Fr. Luis Benages; Fr. Bernardo Broton; and Fr. Domingo Pitarch, who was in Mexico City at the time. Thus, on April 8, 1914, the three Carmelites entered the United States. They had little money and no friends in this country. They did not speak English and had no idea where they would stay. Initially, they did not intend to remain permanently in the United States; they sought only a temporary refuge until they could go on to Spain or perhaps return to Mexico. They spent their first night in El Paso in a hotel, thereby depleting their financial resources. The next day, the Jesuits who had charge of the Church of the Virgin of Guadalupe took them into their house. Hoping to find a place to stay with members of their own order, the three Carmelites decided to go to Chicago, where, they had heard, the Discalced Carmelites had established a house. The Jesuits arranged for their transportation by train, and on April 11 they departed for Chicago.
