Welcome
Geographers at the University of Oklahoma focus on the analysis of the human-environment interface. We bring to the study of this interface overlapping expertise in the areas of cultural, historical, political, and economic geography (Offen, Purcell, Rundstrom, Shelley, Wallach, Wood), applied physical geography (Greene, Hoagland, Spaeth, Tarhule), and geographic information science (Myint, Rashed, Yuan). This focus on the human-environment interface complements and enhances the mission of the College of Geosciences by bridging the social and earth sciences. The Department offers the B.A., B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. For further information about any of these degree programs, please contact the Department Chair, . Prospective students are also encouraged to contact faculty members with whom they share research interests. At the graduate level, priority in admission and funding goes to those students who have established mentoring relationships with potential advisors.

OKLAHOMA - THE SOONER STATE
Geography Oklahoma, one of the Great Plains states, is slightly south of the geographic center of the U.S. Most of the state is a great, rolling plain, sloping gently from northwest to southeast. Highest elevation is 4,973 feet above sea level at the Black Mesa in the northwestern corner of the area known as the Panhandle; lowest, 287 feet, is near Idabel in the extreme southeast. Approximately 24% of the state’s total area is forested, principally the region bordering Missouri and Arkansas. Although part of the Great Plains, Oklahoma has four mountain ranges: the Ouachita in the southeast, the Ozark Plateau in the northeast, the Arbuckle in the south central part of the state, and the Wichita in the southwest. Throughout the northwest and the Panhandle are sudden outcrops of sandstone and gypsum, sharp ravines and stark hills. In the north central region are several salt flats. Largest is the Great Salt Plains, covering about 25 miles near Cherokee. The state’s major rivers are the Arkansas and the Red; the Red River forms the state’s southern boundary with Texas. Other large streams, all flowing into either the Arkansas or the Red, are the Illinois, Grand (or Neosho), Verdigris, Poteau, Canadian, Cimarron, Salt Fork of the Arkansas, and the Washita. On most of the larger rivers, great lakes ranging in size from 890 acres to over 102,500 acres, have been impounded. Largest of more than 60 such reservoirs are Eufaula, Texoma, Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Fort Gibson, Oologah, Kerr, Pine Creek, Broken Bow, Tenkiller, Hudson, Keystone, Foss, Fort Cobb and Great Salt Plains.

NOTE: The geography folks at Oklahoma State have put a similar map on the web, at http://www.ocgi.okstate.edu/geogdept.htm . I encourage you to check it out. For one thing, it's department data are more up to date than mine. It also will give you additional data layers, such as highways, counties, and urban areas, when you zoom in. However, it is slower to use unless you have broadband, and I had problems several times with the tool buttons not showing up after a zoom or refresh. Oklahoma State's map was made with Internet Map Server technology (ArcIMS). When I started my map, this technology was not available; I made mine by making smart maps, turning them into dumb graphics, making image maps out of the dumb graphics, and then making html pages to put them in. This is one of the reasons I haven't updated the map very oftenit is a cumbersome process. However, after looking at OK State's map, I think there is still a place for mine on the web, so I am working, off and on, on a major update, which I hope to have completed before the end of summer 2005. Many of the links are out of date and others need to be added. I also want to add institutions that offer Associate degrees in geography or geographic technology, and to include Mexico. To those of you who have been faithfully emailing me with corrections and additions, my thanks for your patience and apologies for the long delay.

    Abbreviation:
OK The name Oklahoma comes from two Choctaw Indian words, okla, which means "people", and "humma", which means "red." In 1889, Congress opened up 2 million acres for white settlement (it was previously open only to Native Americans who were forced to leave their homelands), and the first of a number of land runs began. Some of the state's settlers were called "Sooners" because they had already staked their land claims before the land was officially opened for settlement. In 1907, Oklahoma became the 46th state in the Union. Oklahoma is a major fuel and food-producing state. Thousands of oil and natural gas wells dot the Oklahoma landscape. Millions of white-faced beef cattle graze on Oklahoma's flat plain and low hills. Fertile fields produce vast crops of wheat. Will Rogers, the famous Oklahoma cowboy humorist, once said, "There ought to be a law against anybody going to Europe until they have seen the things we have in this country". He may have been thinking of some of the scenic spots in his home state. The range of Oklahoma's attractions include beautiful natural settings, Indian villages and striking modern buildings.

GEOGRAPHY: THE SCIENCE OF SPACE AND PLACE
Are you curious about places beyond your front door? Do you want to learn about different cultures, environments, and countries? Would you like to discover why people and places interact as they do? Do you want an understanding of globalization that goes well beyond economic interactions? Do you like maps? Are you concerned about our natural resources and environmental problems? Do revolutionary computer technologies interest you? How about a career that is truly enjoyable? Consider geography. It is the only major that studies both cultural and environmental diversity from a global perspective. Everything happens somewhere ... for reasons ... and with consequences; so geography matters!
