Geographically, the Cross Timbers acted as a buffer separating the Five Civilized Tribes of Indian Territory from the Plains Indians of the west, diverting most major trails and the early railroad routes to north and south corridors outside the region, and influencing the pre-statehood arrangement of Indian and Oklahoma territories.
