63. Genealogy Helplist
Index to localities and counties in oklahoma.
http://posom.com/hl/usa/ok.shtml
The Genealogy Helplist is currently unavailable
19 November 2004
I apologize for the recent state of the Genealogy Helplist.
For the last two years the Genealogy Helplist has been unmaintained. Volunteers are currently listed with outdated email addresses, many are still listed who are no longer able to help, and the resources listed as available to volunteers have become inaccurate. Additionally, entire pages have gone missing as previous page maintainers have left.
Right now there are over 1000 requests for changes to the current site. This is more than the entire number of volunteers that were once listed on the site. It is unknown how many pages are no longer available. It is no longer feasible to bring the current site up to date.
I cannot provide an adequate excuse for this state of affairs. No one has maintained the site since my original volunteers stopped being able to do it. I am sorry.
At this point there are a number of options available. The easiest option would be to simply close down the service. I think this would be a shame since there are so many new offers to volunteer and so many who have written to say that they were helped greatly by this system. However, it would be better to close it down than to leave it in its current state. There are a large number of resources that did not exist at the time this site was started and a greater consciousness of the needs of amateur genealogists on the part of individuals and primary record holders.
The second option would be to turn it over to another organization to maintain. After watching the advent and development of companies such as Ancestry.com over the years I am loathe to trust another commercial interest with this site. There are, however, many organizations out there, and a number of them have made initial inquiries over the years. This would be a difficult thing for me to do, but also probably better than shutting down the site entirely.

Having ignored the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which ended slavery in the United States, the tribes, chose to embrace sovereignty to keep the slaves in bondage. The treaty, signed in 1866 by the same tribes that had formed an alliance with the Southern Confederacy, to join in the fight with the South, finally released their slaves, from bondage. Slavery had taken many forms during its hold in the tribes, and there were, at the same time, some free people of color who did live in the Territory before the release of the slaves. However, the institution did exist within these nations, and it was the treaty signed in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, that finally brought and end to the last foothold of institutionalized slavery in North America. These are excerpts from those treaties signed in 1866.)

The surname Jenkins is the 86th most common family name in the USA. (Check the ranking of your surname on the link below.)
I am interested in the family of Joseph Asa Jenkins (Cass County, Texas, and Grady County, Oklahoma) and his children and relations. His son Orville Lee Jenkins was my father. His mother was Julia Virginia Terry of Georgia and Oklahoma.
I am interested in the family of Andy Gregory of Garvin County, Oklahoma, and his children and relations. His daughter Lou Ila Gregory is my mother. Her mother was Alpharetta Mae Green of Marlow and Lindsay, Oklahoma. My mother moved back to her home town of Lindsay in 1973.
I was born in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma, in 1948, and grew up in Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas, until 1963, when I moved to Conway, Faulkner County, Arkansas, where I finished high school and college. I have lived most of my life since then outside the United States, in Kenya and Cyprus.
I am married to Edith Marie McSwain, of Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas. We presently live in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Our two children, born in Nairobi, Kenya, Gareth Boyd and Christopher Kevin, live in the Dallas, Texas, area.

If they do not pertain to the Texas part of Greer county (1860-1896) they will not be posted. Queries concerning settlers after 1897 should be directed to the appropriate OkGenWeb Project county. The original Greer county Texas covered the current Oklahoma counties of Beckham Greer Harmon Jackson , and parts of Texas counties Childress Collingsworth Hemphill Lipscomb , and Wheeler Queries and Responses
History
On February 8, 1860, the Texas legislature passed an act providing for the formation of Greer County, with boundaries "beginning at the confluence of Red River and Prairie Dog Town River; then running up Red River, passing the mouth of the South Fork (Elm Fork) and following main or North Red River to its intersection with the twenty-third degree of west longitude (the 100th meridian); thence due south across the Salt Fork to Prairie Dog River, and thence following that river to the place of beginning."
But the comparatively rapid development of Greer County was disturbed by a dispute between Texas and the United States over the ownership of the area. The controversy had origin in an 1819 treaty fixing the line between United States and Spanish territory. A map designating the Red River and 100th meridian as boundary lines was part of the treaty; but the map aroused dispute, for it incorrectly marked the 100th meridian and showed only one fork of a two-forked Red River.
