Welcome to the Lifelong Learning Section of the Oklahoma State Department of Education The Lifelong Learning Section is responsible for implementing Title II of the Workforce Investment Act, the Adult Education and Literacy Act. Under the guidelines of the law, 39 Adult Learning Centers have been funded to provide services for educationally disadvantaged adults. For a list of the Adult Learning Centers, click here

Literacy Fact Sheet: Correctional Education
Prisoners generally have significantly lower literacy skills than the general population. Those who improve their skills return to prison less often.
Need
  • Only 51 percent of prisoners have completed high school or its equivalent, compared with 76 percent of the general population. Seventy percent of prisoners scored in the two lowest literacy levels of the National Adult Literacy Survey. This means that while they have some reading and writing skills, they are not adequately equipped to perform tasks like writing a letter explaining an error on a credit card bill or understanding a bus schedule Inmates who have a high school diploma demonstrate lower basic skills than members of the general public with a high school diploma. Eleven percent of prisoners self-report having learning disabilities, compared with three percent of the general population.

  • The federal prison system began mandatory literacy training in 1982, and in 1991 raised the achievement standard from 8th to 12th grade.

Lt. Governor Mary Fallin welcomes conference attendees from all over the nation ProLiteracy Worldwide Board of Directors Chair Ann Michel opened The Many Faces of Literacy conference on Thursday, October 7, welcoming attendees and thanking the local partners: the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Oklahoma Literacy Coalition, and the Oklahoma State Department of Education/Adult Education and Literacy. After a welcome from Oklahoma Lt. Governor Mary Fallin , there was a video welcome from U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Susan Sclafani and comments from Cheryl Keenan The Student Recognition Luncheon festivities included comments from former student and Oklahoma resident, Toni Cordell and Emma Torrez , Student Advisory Council President. Along with the traditional annual student pin recognition ceremony, the Dollar General awards were presented to the Student of the Year, the Tutor of the Year, and the Tutor and Student of the Year Pair.

Envoys and Trailblazers lined up and ready to go to technology centers across Oklahoma.
With a partnership between General Motors and the Career Tech system that spans decades, the decision of the Oklahoma City GM Plant to donate approximately $800,000 worth of vehicles to the Career Tech system was easy, according to Bob Slovey. Slovey is the Automotive Service Educational Program and Automotive Youth Educational Services Program (ASEP/AYES) national manager.
