College of Pharmacy
The College of Pharmacy (COP) at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, the accrediting agency for Colleges of Pharmacy in the United States, and is a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. The COP celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1989 and continues to maintain a tradition of excellence in pharmacy education. The primary mission of SWOSU and the COP is teaching. All full-time faculty in the COP have earned a terminal degree in pharmacy and provide instruction in all the courses in the Pharm. D. program. Typically, most didactic classes have approximately 50 students, while most laboratory classes taught within the COP have approximately 15 students. Graduates of COP continue to perform above average on the NAPLEX, the national licensing examination for pharmacy. In recent years, there has been virtually 100% employment for graduates of the COP at SWOSU. Approximately 30 companies a year recruit students for employment in a variety of areas in pharmacy practice. Salaries for new graduates are typically $80,000 or more per year.

District Teachers Learn Methods for Closing the Achievement Gap
With the new school year approaching, more than 800 of the district’s educators enthusiastically took advantage of a valuable and insightful professional development opportunity focusing on "Closing the Achievement Gap" on August 4th. Renowned educator, Larry Bell was the featured speaker. The district has adopted an intense goal focus on narrowing the achievement gap as part of its new direction under the MAPS for Kids plan that is very much in line with No Child Left Behind. Over the past two years, progress in this area is evident when OKCPS student tests scores are compared to those in surrounding metropolitan school districts.
Bell, who has more than 25 years of educational experience and is lauded for his knowledge and skills in the area of student achievement, shared with our educators proven instructional strategies to improve student achievement at the conference. After this very productive day, our educators can now return to the classroom empowered for the new year and ready to help our students succeed academically.

During this era of unfunded mandates, budget shortfalls, and the public's demand for quality teachers and quality schools, it's time to take our efforts to the next level and ask the courts to do what the legislature has failed to do. As the voice of public education in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Education Association will seek a legal ruling that ensures every child in Oklahoma is provided an equal opportunity for a constitutionally adequate education. "We must shift the debate from partisan politics to what it actually costs to adequately fund a child's education." Roy Bishop, President
Oklahoma Education Association
Lawsuits challenging state methods of funding public
schools have been brought in 45 of the 50 states.
Making the Case for Adequacy and Equity Through its dynamic lobbying efforts, the Oklahoma Education Association year after year has taken the lead in compelling the legislature to improve education funding. Working within the traditional framework of claiming our share of an already determined budget we have celebrated many legislative and organizing successes. In spite of those successes, Oklahoma continues to rank among the bottom five in education funding. During this era of unfunded mandates, budget shortfalls and the public’s demand for quality teachers and quality schools, it’s time to take our efforts to the next level and ask the courts to do what the legislature has failed to do.
