Tanker spills oil in Russia river
Story Tools MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) Firefighters struggled to contain a blaze on an oil tanker on Russia's Volga river Sunday and ecologists warned that tonnes of oil leaking from the vessel posed a serious environmental threat. Television reports showed plumes of black smoke sweeping above the river in central Russia as the tanker carrying 2,000 tonnes of light crude burned for a second day. Oil started to leak from the vessel in large quantities early Sunday, creating a 15-meter (50-foot) wide slick that officials said was drifting down the river. "Up to 700 tonnes of crude have leaked from the oil tanker Viktoria so far," a duty officer for the Transport Ministry's river department told Reuters. "The fire is yet to be put out as it has spread to the remaining oil on the tanker." River traffic had not been disrupted, the officer said. The spilt oil was contained inside a special boom, but had washed onto the riverbank in some places, he said. Emergency and environmental services were working to remove the oil. The fire broke out Saturday after an explosion occurred on the privately owned tanker, which is near the town of Sizran, about 700 kilometers (440 miles) east of Moscow. One crew member was killed by the blast, officials said.

Prestige tanker spills oil off Spanish Coast; what was the longterm impact of the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska?

This time, it's Galicia, Spain's northwest coast, where the sluggish oil slick is coming to rest. The story itself is familiar the dying seabirds, the oil-smeared volunteers trying to remove the sticky stuff from beaches, coves and rocky shores that, we can only imagine, were magnets for people and wildlife alike before the wretched slick moved in. As the TV cameras zoom in, drawn to destruction like lawyers to a car wreck, the talking head discusses the blunders that caused the spill and the hasty decisions over the clean-up. Soon you'll hear the second-guessing and finger-pointing. Almost nothing beats a huge oil spill as a made-for-TV ecodisaster. Even though they are relatively common (history records 66 spills more than 10 million gallons) the cameras still show horrorific despoilation. Although the details were different, the Prestige spill reminded us of 1989, when the Exxon Valdez slobbered 37,000 tons of oil into Prince William Sound, Alaska.

Exxon Shipping Company was renamed Sea River Shipping Company. The Exxon Valdez was repaired and renamed the Sea River Mediterranean and is used to haul oil across the Atlantic. The ship is prohibited by law from returning to Prince William Sound. How did the accident happen?
The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the accident and determined that the probable causes of the grounding were:
  • The failure of the third mate to properly maneuver the vessel, possibly due to fatigue and excessive workload;
  • The failure of the master to provide a proper navigation watch, possibly due to impairment from alcohol;
  • The failure of Exxon Shipping Company to supervise the master and provide a rested and sufficient crew for the Exxon Valdez
  • The failure of the U.S. Coast Guard to provide an effective vessel traffic system

    POST CONFERENCE REPORT Oil Spill 2004 Fourth International Conference on Hydrocarbon Spills, Modelling,
    28 - 30 April 2004
    Alicante, Spain

    Organised by Wessex Institute of Technology, UK The University of Alicante, Spain OPENING ADDRESS The Fourth International Conference on Hydrocarbon Spills, Modelling, Analysis and Control (Oil Spill) took place recently in Alicante, organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology of the UK and the University of Alicante, with the support of the Caja de Ahorros de Mediterraneo. The Conference Chairmen were Professor Carlos Brebbia from WIT, Prof Yolanda Villacampa and Professor Jose Miguel Saval, from the University of Alicante. Carlos opened the conference by explaining the importance of the topic for the Alicante Region and hoping that the participants would have occasion to discuss these problems with the colleagues from the University during the meeting. The danger of oil pollution in coastal areas such as that around Alicante cannot be overstressed. Oil spills are not only expensive to remediate but have negative long-term effects in zones depending on tourism and fishing for their livelihood. Numerous and frequent oil spills have shown the extent of the damage inflicted on the environment, when a large volume of oil is released over a short period of time and, in particular, the susceptibility of certain environments, such as coastal regions, to these spills. Although oil spills are frequently a major issue at sea and in coastal areas, the conference also addressed topics related to soil and land spills, such as those due to leaks during transportation over land or storage tanks and pipelines. The conference provided an international forum for the discussion of the latest research in this field, as well as the ways in which the most adequate response and emergency measures can be implemented. The topic of remediation and long term biological effects was also discussed during the meeting.

    Oil Spill Response Plan
    This plan specifies actions to be taken by CWS Atlantic Region in the event of an oil spill or the presence of oiled migratory birds. Both large and small events are addressed, with no attempt to concentrate on the "mega-spill". This plan does not replace any element of the REET Atlantic Region Contingency Plan (1999), but elaborates and complements those parts of it which pertain to migratory birds. All migratory bird species which may be affected by oil spills, and their terrestrial, fresh water, marine and inter-tidal habitats, are within the purview of this plan. The plan addresses oil spill response requirements for species managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service, but combined with response plans of other agencies it forms a blueprint for dealing with all wildlife species affected by oil spills. It is not within the scope of the plan to identify all potential participants in migratory bird-related oil spill response, but information and reporting paths are specified, and responsible officers in the Canadian Wildlife Service are identified. Contacts in other organizations with interests in or responsibility for wildlife will be set out in the

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
    Volunteers cleaning up the aftermath of the Prestige oil spill An oil spill is the release of oil (generally, petroleum ) into the natural environment, usually the ocean . Oil means oil of any kind or in any form and includes crude oil , oil refuse, petroleum-related products or by-products, oil mixed in waste, oily ballast, and oily bilge water. Studies of the effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill have shown that the environmental damage caused by oil spills is greater than was previously thought. It is now thought that the impact on marine life can be serious at less than one part per billion of pollution. Oil can also be washed up on beaches, requiring a large amount of work to be cleaned up. Birds can also get oil stuck in their feathers, which can render them flightless unless washed. The oil can also poison them if they attempt to prean their feathers. Heavier components of crude oil, such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) appear to cause the most damage; while they are relatively unreactive they persist in the water much longer than volatile components such as toluene Oil spills can even endanger some of the worlds species.Oil spills causes many marine life to die, disrupting our food chain, affecting the community and food web.This is a short term effect.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
    The Exxon Valdez oil spill was the most devastating domestic oil spill in the United States . Its remote location (accessible only by helicopter and boat) made government and industry response efforts difficult and tested existing plans for dealing with such an event. The region was habitat for salmon sea otters seals , and sea birds During the first few days of the spill, heavy sheens of oil, such as the sheen visible in this photograph, covered large areas of the surface of Prince William Sound. On March 23 , the oil tanker Exxon Valdez departed from the Valdez oil terminal in Valdez, Alaska (on its 28th voyage), heading south through Prince William Sound , with a full load of oil . Captain Joseph Hazelwood radioed to the Coast Guard station that he would be changing course in order to avoid some growlers , small icebergs which had drifted into the sound from the Columbia Glacier . The captain received permission to move into the northbound lane. Before retiring to his cabin, Captain Hazelwood instructed his third mate Gregory Cousins to steer the vessel back into the southbound lane once it passed Busby Island . Although Cousins did give the instructions to the helmsman to steer the vessel to the right, the vessel was not turning sharply enough and at 12:04 a.m. on
