Pollution and Oceans Since the beginning of time, the ocean has been regarded as boundless and untouchable by human activity. Because of its colossal size and depth, attempts at understanding the ocean are laden with difficulties. However, it has now become apparent that the ocean, despite its immense magnitude, can drastically be changed by the day-to-day routines of humans. Unprecedented changes are occurring along coastal regions as well as into the far depths of the oceans. Environmental change and degradation are continuously being caused by population growth, along with the concurrent development of commercial, industrial and recreational activity. While the particular causes of environmental change are multifaceted, numerous human activities and natural events are now said to be the driving forces in the alteration of the global ocean. Despite the vital role they play for the survival of fish, invertebrates, mammals, sea turtles, and waterfowl, ecosystems such as mangroves and other wetlands are in rapid decline throughout most of the coastal regions of the U.S. Occurrences such as dredging, propeller scouring, disease manifestations, pesticide and herbicide poisonings, and lack of sunlight caused by the increased turbidity of the water has lead to the destruction of these delicate habitats. Salt marshes, which have been widely distributed along U.S. coasts, are considered one of the earth's most biologically productive ecosystems. However, more than half of the original salt marshes and mangrove forests in the U.S. have been destroyed, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker to Birds die from oil spills if their feathers are covered in oil.
http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0215471/oil_spills.htm
Imagine yourself as a killer whale. You are swimming around when you decide to stick your head out of the water to take a breath. As you are taking a breath, you see a large stream of thick black oil heading your way. You go back under water only to find other animals dying one by one because the oil is damaging their bodies. This is the way some animals must die in the ocean. They die because of an oil spill occurring in their habitat What’s an oil spill? Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker to leak oil into the ocean. There are a few more ways an oil spill can occur. Equipment breaking down may cause an oil spill. If the equipment breaks down, the tanker may get stuck on shallow land. When they start to drive the tanker again, they can put a hole in the tanker causing it to leak oil. When countries are at war, one country may decide to dump gallons of oil into the other country’s oceans. Terrorists may cause an oil spill because they will dump oil into a country’s ocean. Many terrorists will do this because they are trying to get the country’s attention, or they are trying to make a point to a country. Illegal dumpers are people that will dump crude oil into the oceans because they do not want to spend money on decomposing their waste oil. Because they won’t spend money on breaking up the oil (decomposing it) they will dump oil into the oceans, which is illegal.

based on "Environmental Impact of the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry" Below you will find a short discussion of oil fate and behavior during an oil spill in the sea. Click on the links at the end of the page to find more information on Environmental Impact of the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry.
Oil spills in the marine environment
Fate and behavior of oil in the marine environment Complex processes of oil transformation in the marine environment start developing from the first seconds of oil's contact with seawater. The progression, duration, and result of these transformations depend on the properties and composition of the oil itself, parameters of the actual oil spill, and environmental conditions. The main characteristics of oil transformations are their dynamism, especially at the first stages, and the close interaction of physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms of dispersion and degradation of oil components up to their complete disappearance as original substances. Similar to an intoxicated living organism, a marine ecosystem destroys, metabolizes, and deposits the excessive amounts of hydrocarbons, transforming them into more common and safer substances.

Care During Oil Spill Response
Cover Memo

Final Document
The challenge of managing oil spills in the United States is increasing in complexity and magnitude. Oil spills threaten millions of miles of coastline, river systems, lakes and terrestrial habitat daily, particularly where there is extensive oil drilling, refining, and transport. Serious, and potentially permanent, ecological damage is possible where chronic spills or spills of national significance occur. The goal of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Oil Spill Program is to emphasize early (contingency) planning and cooperation at the local, regional and national level in an effort to minimize the injury to fish, wildlife, and sensitive environments from oil spills. The Departments of the Interior, Commerce and Agriculture, together with Tribal governments, States, and other jurisdictions, are responsible for protecting these natural resources. Because oil spills respect no boundaries, uniform Federal policies and programs are essential. In addition, since the resources necessary to respond to oil spills are limited and vary among the response agencies, it is more important than ever to establish and strengthen cooperative relationships.

The text on this site is presented as an archival version of the script of "Ocean Planet," a 1995 Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition. The content reflects the state of knowledge at the time of the exhibition, and has not been updated. The information on this buoy is divided into the three categories listed below.
When it comes to mixing oil and water, oceans suffer from far more than an occasional devastating spill. Disasters make headlines, but hundreds of millions of gallons of oil quietly end up in the seas every year, mostly from non-accidental sources
The graph below shows how many millions of gallons of oil each source puts into the oceans worldwide each year
Down the Drain: 363 Million Gallons
Used engine oil can end up in waterways. An average oil change uses five quarts; one change can contaminate a million gallons of fresh water. Much oil in runoff from land and municipal and industrial wastes ends up in the oceans. 363 million gallons Road runoff adds up
Every year oily road runoff from a city of 5 million could contain as much oil as one large tanker spill
Routine Maintenance: 137 Million Gallons
Every year, bilge cleaning and other ship operations release millions of gallons of oil into navigable waters, in thousands of discharges of just a few gallons each. 137 million gallons

Plant stress: The following USDA image (and most of the text) is a thermal image of a cotton canopy that was part of a water and nitrogen study in Arizona. Blues and greens represent lower temperatures than yellow and orange. The image, showing plant stress, was acquired with a thermal scanner, similar to the Daedalus shown below. Most of the blue rectangles (plots) in the image correspond to high water treatments. However, note that many of the patterns do not correspond to the treatment plots, but represent the natural variability in soil conditions across the field. If the field above were irrigated uniformly, some areas of the field would receive more water than the plants need, while other areas would not receive enough.
