Akron, Ohio Schools Under Fire for Sponsoring Planned Parenthood Event by Paul Nowak
LifeNews.com Editor February 20, 2004 Akron, OH (LifeNews.com) A public service radio station that is part of the Akron, Ohio public school system was co-sponsoring an event with Planned Parenthood until an investigation by LifeNews.com and Right to Life of Summit County caused them to back out. The Akron Beacon Journal reported on Thursday that the "Undercover Competition 2004," a design contest for condom packaging, was being co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood and WAPS-FM 91.3, a public service station sponsored by Akron Public Schools. Proceeds of the event benefit Planned Parenthood's programs and services, including abortions. Also, a Planned Parenthood web site promotional for the event listed Ryan Humbert, the station's Director of Development and show host as a judge in the event.

CRITICAL UPDATE ON STATE EDUCATION POLICY Long Post
CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT MAY BE NEEDED SOON
To all:
The purpose of this email is to provide an overview of the rule language
being developed by the Ohio Department of Education [ODE] which will replace the 1983 minimum standards for Ohio schools. The ODE plans to bring a draft to the State Board of Education at their September meeting [9/11/00 and 9/12/00]. At that time there will likely be a presentation by ODE staff and board discussion, but NO VOTE.
This drafted document carries significant impact on all students – both implicitly and explicitly. ODE staff has explained that the timeline is expected to be as follows: 1. September – presentation to the State Board of Education 2. October – State Board of Education votes on a "resolution of intent" to adopt the rule language for the Ohio Administrative Code.

State Senator Jay Hottinger
State Senator Jay Hottinger A dangerous petition is being circulated across Ohio to place a constitutional amendment before Ohio voters that would upset more than a decade worth of progress that's been made to better fund Ohio's schools. Known as the "Educate Ohio" amendment, supporters of this plan had hoped to place the proposal before Ohio voters this fall by making false claims and ignoring the bigger problems this measure would create. Although the initiative did not receive enough signatures in time for this November's ballot, the group continues to work to put the amendment on the ballot in 2006. The Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding and former state representative Bryan Flannery support the plan that would replace $2.5 billion in local property taxes, now collected by districts, with general state taxpayer money. At least nine leading statewide education organizations including teachers unions, administrators, PTA's and the school boards, have issued statements opposing the plan. "Educate Ohio" supporters highlight the fact that the amendment would cap local property tax rates used by school districts to 15 mills statewide. It sounds very good for property owners who currently pay more than 15 mills because they would get a tax cut. However, the downside of the plan is that it would also establish an unelected commission to identify quality education standards for Ohio schools as well as to determine the cost of meeting those standards. Funds raised from the 15-mill property tax would be applied toward that cost, but any difference between the cost and the amount raised by the 15-mill property tax would have to be paid for using general state funds.

OHIO SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO RECEIVE MORE THAN $700,000 THANKS TO
TIMBER MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES ON OHIO'S STATE FORESTS
COLUMBUS, OH Seventeen Ohio school districts will share a total of $703,993 this year from the sale of timber and other products on state forests, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) announced today. Under legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly in 1996, 40 percent of revenues generated from any timber management project on state forest lands is distributed to local school districts in the county where the project took place. An additional 40 percent of revenues is allocated to the local county and township governments (20 percent each), while the remaining 20 percent is deposited in the state's General Revenue Fund. In all, more than $1,400,000 will be distributed this year as a result of forest management activities on Ohio's 20 state forests. Revenues generated from state forests also include royalties from the production of minerals, such as oil and gas, on state land. The ODNR Division of Forestry, created in 1885, is responsible for managing more than 180,000 acres of state forests across Ohio. Through carefully selected timber management projects, foresters have been able to improve the health, vigor and productivity of state forest lands.
