Professional Commentary:
In this professional development article, author David O'Brien posits a literacy where a variety of socially and culturally appropriate literacies (media and visual arts, amongst others) enables students to construct meaning. And by allowing students to employ a literacy beyond the traditional definition of print literacy where a singular skill or process is applied predominately in school-based settings and tasks, O'Brien concludes that we might help the "at-risk" learner, the struggling reader, to achieve success in literacy. Libraries for the National Education Goals. ERIC Digest.
This digest is based on Libraries for the National Education Goals, by Barbara K. Stripling. By the year 2000, it is envisioned that our nation will have accomplished the six National Education Goals adopted in 1990 by the President and the governors of the United States. Since libraries are the only educational system available to everyone, regardless of age or affiliation, it is logical to turn to our nation's libraries to help to achieve these goals. To demonstrate the critical role libraries can and do play in support of the national education initiatives, an extensive literature review and analysis was undertaken (Stripling, 1992). This digest highlights the findings of that review.
GOAL ONE: BY THE YEAR 2000, ALL CHILDREN IN AMERICA WILL START SCHOOL READY TO LEARN.

Synopsis
Ohio's Highly Qualified Teacher Definition: Key Information
The Duties of Title I Paraprofessionals
Synopsis
The Act identifies specific activities that Title I paraprofessionals may perform, including tutoring, assisting in classrooms under the direct supervision of teachers, assisting in computer labs, conducting parental involvement activities, supporting libraries and media centers and translating. Title I paraprofessionals are prohibited from acting as substitute teachers, but may perform the same duties beyond classroom instruction that non-Title I paraprofessionals perform, as long as they spend no more than the same amount of time doing so. top of page
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has issued guidance for meeting the requirements of Title II, Part A of the ESEA. The ESEA requires that all teachers in core academic areas meet the requirements of being "highly qualified" by the end of the 2005-2006 school year. Some $2.85 billion in federal funding is available in the 2002 budget for a variety of activities to meet this goal, including: (1) teacher recruitment, preparation and licensure; (2) teacher support; (3) teacher retention; and (4) professional development. In return for this flexibility, states will be held accountable for demonstrating annual progress in reaching the goal of having all of their teachers in core academic areas meet the "highly qualified" requirements.

The Florida Study like others done in fifteen states link achievement in schools with a credentialed library media specialist. The study collected a great deal of information about the collections, services, staff, and programs of Florida's K-12 public school library media centers so that many questions can be answered about the status of Florida's LMCs in addition to the achievement link. The study begins with a comprehensive executive summary followed by the full report complete with tables and methodology. The executive summary is valuable for those making presentations to parents, boards of education, and other interested groups. For persons outside Florida, this study adds to the pile of evidence. We Boost Achievement! Evidence-Based Practice for School Library Media Specialists
Want to collect the evidence that you boost the achievement in your school with your LMC program? This book provides a multitude of techniques to collect evidence concerning reading, information literacy, collaborative planning, and technology. And like throwing pebbles in a pool causing a ripple effect, these measures not only document what you are doing, but suggest changes in your program to maximize your impact.

  • 301.1 How to Really Love Your Child
In this hectic performance-oriented world, many children fell that love has become a reward. "My parents will love me more if I do well in school, clean my room, or win in sports." This perception has been devastating to millions of children who feel they can never measure up. This video clearly demonstrates that unconditional love is the very cornerstone for successful parenting. Parents will learn how to convey unconditional love all the time.

Ohio County offers its residents a nationally recognized school system. The elementary school system allows students to spend the first important years at a school near their homes or neighborhoods. During the 1990s, a multi-million dollar development program built or renovated every school in the system. Ohio County taxpayers have traditionally given their overwhelming support to educational levies, placing Ohio County among the top counties in West Virginia in per capita spending for education. Such support is evident in that six schools in Ohio County have been designated National Schools of Excellence. This unprecedented degree of recognition has come to Wheeling Park High School, Bridge Street Middle School, Triadelphia Middle School, Wheeling Middle School, Elm Grove Elementary and Madison Elementary. West Virginia Schools of Excellence recognition has also been awarded to all 14 schools in the Ohio County system. Ohio County is the only county in West Virginia to have 100 percent of its schools so named.
