The Columbus Metropolitan Library , as well as several local libraries in the mid Ohio area, are making books available through electronic means (digital and audio) via the Mid Ohio Library Digital Initiative . It is possible to apply for a Columbus Metro Library lending card on-line . There are a number of help documents available to assist in using their service including specific help for audio books and how to transfer books to a portable device such as a PDA (Personal Data Assistant) or some portable media players (digital music players). With the compression techniques used it is possible to compress an 8 hour audio book to fit in a 128 Meg player. Specific instructions are available for both Windows Media Player 9 or Windows Media Player 10 . You "check out" an electronic book or audio book in a similar fashion to normal books, except you don't have to return them. Instead the files you receive are protected in such a manner that the ability to access them expires after the check out date.

State Library of Ohio Consortium Launches New Digital Library
Libraries collaborate to deliver digital content to rural communities
(CALDWELL, OH - 05/24/04) In the heart of rural Ohio, where horse-drawn carriages and tractors share the road with cars, library patrons are downloading eBooks directly to their PCs and PDAs using the internet. Southeastern Ohio Automation Consortium (SEO), a consortium of 67 Ohio public libraries, has launched a new online service ( http://seoebook.seo.lib.oh.us ) for its library members and their patrons enabling browsing and check out of popular eBooks from homes, offices and schools. Members of SEO, a branch of the State Library of Ohio, include Adams County Public Library, Guernsey County Public Library, and Newcomerstown Public Library. OverDrive, Inc., (www.overdrive.com) a leading vendor of eBook and digital media solutions for libraries, supplied the technology for the new service. Christine Tucker, SEO Director said, "SEO is a diverse consortium serving both small and large populations so we chose a platform flexible enough to meet the needs of all our member libraries. OverDrive's technology enables us to have a shared eBook system that gives thousands of patrons across Ohio easy access to digital media." Bestsellers and classics, fiction and non-fiction from popular authors and leading publishers such as HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Zondervan, and John Wiley and Sons are available in Adobe PDF and Mobipocket formats. Patrons download free reader software and use their library cards to check out and download eBooks from the website to their PCs, Macs, PDA (Palm OS) devices, Pocket PCs and certain Smartphones. eBooks automatically return to the collection at the end of the loan period.
