    by Michael Lorenzen
(This study was published as "Security Issues of Ohio Public Libraries."
ERIC ED #416 907, February 1998. It is now becoming dated. I am putting it
online as there is a dearth of good information online about library security.)
    INTRODUCTION:
Educational institutions are not always safe and secure places. Violence
and property crimes can and do occur. Public libraries are no exception and
they are subject to a wide variety of security concerns. These include the
theft and mutilation of library material as well as the harassment of library staff and patrons by disturbed individuals. Libraries have responded in many ways to these issues including installing security systems and writing library security policies.

Check out the following sessions being sponsored by the Information Technology Division! Always a River, Sometimes a Library: Reexamining Library Practice and Patron Service in the Digital Age
Rick Anderson, Dir. of Resource Acquisition, University of Nevada, Reno Libraries Patron behavior is like a river: librarians can try to redirect it, but our users will ultimately go where they wish to go, not where we tell them. What does this mean in the digital age? Do our cherished values and time-honored standards still apply? (Answer: maybe, and maybe not.) Does the world still need librarians, and if so, what should we be doing? Warning: there will be no rah-rah rhetoric or professional self-congratulation offered in this session. We will be taking a hard look at the fit between our practices and our patrons' needs, and casting a cold analytical eye on our prospects for the future. We'll talk about the Teach a Man to Fish Fallacy, about the Fetishization of Completeness and Accuracy, about the Thrill of Risk and the Beauty of Failure. And we'll have fun doing it! Come contribute to a lively discussion and take away some new ways of thinking about ourselves and our patrons. Around the Next River Bend: A Technology Trends Update
