British-born geography professor plots place for himself at Ohio State
By Christopher Blume Published: Tuesday, July 1, 2003 Kevin Cox, an Ohio State professor in the department of geography, was one of three professors awarded the 2003 Distinguished University Professor title. The yearly award recognizes distinctive accomplishments in research, scholarly or creative work, teaching and service.
"I felt extraordinarily humbled," Cox said. "I was overwhelmed. I'm sure there are lots of people who deserve it just as much as I do."
Arriving at OSU in 1965, Cox helped the department of geography rise to the top five in the nation. Under his leadership, the undergraduate curriculum was revised, new courses were added and student services were revitalized.
"Geography is a very diverse field," Cox said. "One of the areas that we have tried to develop in this department is the aspect of geography that looks at the relationship between people and their natural environment. It's much more political and cultural than it used to be."

In addition, however, Ohio's historical attractions, varying landscapes, and recreational opportunities are the basis for a thriving tourist industry. Over 2,500 lakes and 70,000 kilometers of river landscapes are a paradise for boaters, fishermen, and swimmers. Of special historical interest are the Native American archeological sites including grave mounds and other sites. Originally from Bombay, India, I came to the US in 1992 for graduate studies in geography. Prior to joining USM, I spent time getting my M.A. and Ph.D. at universities in the Midwest, and taught at Emporia State University in Kansas where I also co-directed the GeoSpatial Analysis Program. I have taught a variety of geography courses over the past few years and this semester I am teaching World Regional Geography and Human-Environment Geography. GEO 104J: World Regional Geography Research Interests My research focuses on aspects of society-environment interaction. More specifically, I use an institutional approach to explain environmental change and focus my attention on state-managed resource regimes in South Asia and other forest and wetland resources across the American Midwest. My research on India elaborates on the conditions that promote the efficacy of forest and other state institutions in sustainable resource management. This work is based in the tropical forests of India's Western Ghats. I am currently also collaborating on a NASA funded project that uses high (spatial and spectral) resolution aerial and space-based imagery to examine changes in land use and land cover across the American Midwest and Great Plains regions. At present, this work involves refining remote sensing techniques that will enable our team to analyze changes in

Ohio County Student Wins Geography Championship Posted: April 11th, 2000
Benjamin Bateson, an eighth grader at Warwood Middle School in Ohio County, today became West Virginia’s 2000 State Geographic Bee champion.
Benjamin now goes on to compete in the National Geographic Bee, which is May 23-24 in Washington, D.C. Benjamin won by correctly answering “Carpathian Mountains” to the question, “The source of the Dniester River is in southwestern Ukraine in what mountain system?”
The 100 West Virginia competitors earned their place in the State Geographic Bee by winning local Geography Bees and then earned a top score on a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society. Second place winner was Ian Hicks from Hancock County; and third place honors went to Joseph Chambers from Raleigh County. The State Geographic Bee was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston.
“These students have demonstrated a remarkable knowledge of geography that will prepare them for a successful future,” said State Superintendent Dr. David Stewart. “Students
across West Virginia recognize the importance of geography in everyday life and its significance in competing in a global society.”

    Background
Washington County is found in the extreme southwest corner of Pennsylvania. Of the four major geographic regions in the state, Washington Co. is on the Allegheny Plateau. The Allegheny Plateau covers roughly half the state, that half bounded in the east by the ridges of Allegheny mountains. Rolling hills delineated by creeks or "runs" and punctuated by springs comprise the area which was originally hardwood forest. The primeval forest supported black bear, elk, moose, deer, panthers, wildcats, wolves, wild ducks and geese, ruffed grouse, quail, pheasants, turkeys, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, and woodchucks. This part of the state drains into the Ohio river system. The Monongahela River, which flows northward to join the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh and form the Ohio River, forms Washington County's eastern boundary.
