We would like to welcome you to the Cuyahoga County OHGenWeb site. While we are doing a major re-construction of this site, please bear with us. We have tried to take out some of the non-working links for the moment. If you find any more, please contact Holly Timm , or Lorraine Newsome Please check back often for updates! This Cuyahoga County site is a part of OHGenWeb and of the USGenWeb Project which was begun in the spring of 1996 by a handful of genealogists with interests in Kentucky. These interested researchers embarked on their plan to create websites for every county in Kentucky and soon groups formed for other states. Out of this beginning grew the USGenWeb Project in which volunteers create and maintain web sites for every state and county as well as special projects. H ancock County was created in 1820 and Organized in 1828. It was formed from portions of Delaware and Logan Counties. In 1845, a portion of Wyandot County was formed form Hancock. A Brief History H ancock County was named after John Hancock, the Revolutionary War hero. It was first populated as far back as 1769 when Jean Jacques Blanchard, a Frenchman, settled in the area. He was a tailor by trade. The city of Findlay was founded in 1812 and was named after Colonel James Findlay of the Ohio Frontier Army. A stockade, called Fort Findlay, was the earliest development and stood just west of the location where the Main Street Bridge crosses the Blanchard River. The fort was abandoned after the war of 1812 but remained as a settlement for the pioneers of the area. In the 1880's gas and oil was discovered in the area which caused rapid population growth. Guernsey County was created 1810 March 1, out of Belmont and Muskingum Counties. Portions of Guernsey County were later incorporated into the counties of Monroe (1813 January 29), Morgan (1817 December 29), and Noble (1851 March 11). Guernsey County was named for the English Channel island of the same name, the origin of many of the early settlers. The county seat is Cambridge. The county lies along Zane's Trace and the old National Road (U.S. 40), over which many pioneers traveled in the 18th century to open up America's interior. Harrison County was formed in 1813, from Jefferson County on the East, and about 3/4 of the County on the West was formed from Tuscarawas County. Two Northern Townships, Rock and Union, were taken from Harrison County in 1833 and made part of Carroll County. Harrison County is named for William Henry Harrison, Hero of the War of 1812, and the first President of the United States to be elected from the state of Ohio. Welcome to the Volker's Homepage! The main purpose of this site is to provide genealogical information about our family tree and to provide information about the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
Please keep in mind that the genealogy information posted here has been collected from many different sites and sources. It is the combined work of many relatives, especially some cousins met over the Internet. We would like to say thanks to all the people off the Internet who have freely shared their family trees, and to family and cousins who have added many names to this tree through years of research.
Also, there is a special section dedicated to the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. A very special thanks goes to my husband for his support and encouragement of my genealogical pursuits. Without his vast knowledge of history and technical expertise, this site would never have become a reality!

    About Our Family Research
November 16, 2002 - I just started to research my family tree. My sister, Sue, did a good job of researching my mother's side of the family. However, there are still blanks to fill in and people to locate.
I was not close to my father's family. He died when I was 8 years old. I know very, very little of his side of the family. My brother who is 2 years older than I knows as much as I do, and I haven't seen my half-sister in 40 years.
If any one has information on my family that would help me in my quest, please let me know. Thank you, Dave

"The Athens Mental Health Center opened on January 9, 1874 on land purchased from the Arthur Coates farm. Arthur's father Old Arthur Coates was the first ferry operator in Athens. The farm was a beautiful location and a large group of residents acting together purchased the beautiful farm for the future hospital. The Administration building housed offices of the Superintendent, assistant physicians, steward, and a general reception room for visitors. Two wings added to the building were used for patients. The second floor contained apartments of the medical superintendent. The third and fourth floors were used for administrative offices. Today the buildings are owned by the Ohio University and are being renovated for university use. The flood of 1967 brought changes to the landscape as the river was moved closer to the hospital and the picturesque ponds and waterfalls of the hospital grounds were removed by this change. "

    The Northeastern Kentucky Fisher Family
    Updated September 5, 2000
My sister, Cathy, must've caught the family tree bug. She found a page on FamilyTreeMaker from James Fisher. I didn't really know anything about the Fisher side of my family except what dad and Nanny (Mary)Fisher had told me.
As it turns out James is my third cousin. I found that out with the relationship calculator in FTM v7.0. I have been adding all the info I can get. I have been doing some work on my mother's family in the past, so my tree is growing in that direction, too. Probably the most interesting tree I will be working on is my wife's mother's family. It seems that they are descended from a man named Jesse Wise. There are some possible links to George Washington. The two that are more certain are Nathan Hale ("I regret I have but one life to give for my country") and Diana Spencer, or better known as Princess Di.
As short as my attention span is, who knows how long I'll do this. It's fun now, so what the heck!
