The DRC-DEV Vision
The mandate for the DRC is simple: to create the most compelling digital repository platform possible so that institutions will find the DRC a more desirable alternative to building their own system. To date, OhioLINK has been a compelling example of achieving large economies of scale by pooling our resources together. The first pool of resources was our physical items, as exemplified in the OhioLINK Central Catalog. The second pool of resources was monetary, as members gave their own collection development funds to the group to achieve a buying power not possible as individual institutions. Today, this third pool of resources is the talent of local staff. More than with past projects, the compelling vision to build the DRC requires the skills already resident in the staff of our institutions: systems analysis, software development, curation, technical writing, quality assurance testing, cataloging, user interface testing, project management, internal and external communications, and instruction. The vision to build the DRC also requires the wisdom, experience, ideas, and feedback of all thoughtful, engaged professionals delivering services to users in order to build that most compelling digital repository platform possible.

Grant Funded Project – temporary position for 2 years. The System Developer position will serve as a key team member to facilitate the design, development, testing and implementation of new content management technologies for state of Ohio higher education communities through OhioLINK. The system developer will be building custom applications using Tomcat/Java in the Fedora Project environment ( http://www.fedora.info/ ). The java applications will be used to deliver web content as enterprise-scale web sites.
Education:
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related technical field is desired. Hand's-on experience with Java, Apache/Tomcat, UNIX, and XML/XSL are more important than a formal college degree in Computer Science. An American Library Association (ALA) accredited graduate level degree is also desired.

CHAPTER 2: TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Alabama: Making the Case for Educational Technology
Because of a shortage in revenue in FY03, the Alabama legislature cut many educational programs, one of which was technology. In fact, state funding for technology to the local school districts was cut from $181 per teacher to zero. At the annual Alabama Education Technology Association Symposium, district technology leaders and superintendents met in roundtable discussions concerning the funding crisis. Their discussions led to the exploration of the question, "Do our leaders really understand what would happen in our schools if the technology was suddenly turned off?" The concept of a "Technology Blackout Day" was conceived. After further discussions it was decided that turning off all of the technology for a day would be unsafe to the school children. Therefore, a more positive approach was taken to educate key decision makers on the value of technology in our educational system. A

Ohio Memory Project Progress Report
March 2001 – June 2001 OVERVIEW Since March 2001, the Ohio Memory Project has made great progress. Staff visited numerous cultural institutions, responded to requests for information, and selected collections submitted by Ohio institutions for inclusion in the Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook. With the assistance of the Ohio Library Council (OLC), the staff presented a series of six workshops to publicize the project. The project team updated the project web site to make more information about Ohio Memory available and encourage participation. They conducted usability testing of the web interface to refine and finalize the design of the site, making sure that it meets the needs of its users. In addition, staff worked closely with OhioLINK in developing the online scrapbook. ACTIVITIES Submissions For the May 2001 deadline, the following institutions submitted collections (a complete list of participating institutions is attached as an appendix):

The University of Kansas, Center for Research on Learning, as part of a Research and Demonstration Project with the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, confirmed that adult educators need and desire information and training on how to work with and effectively accommodate adult learners with varying disabilities and on the legal issues involved in doing so. This workshop will focus on the adult educator's role in addressing those needs and specifically address activities appropriate to adult education instructors (as opposed to program directors). Participants will receive a copy of the Accommodations Notebook.

This workshop will certify participants to administer, score, and make instructional decisions based upon the CASAS assessments. Participants will learn how to use the ABE and ESL appraisals and diagnostic assessments and other available resources for their programs. The workshop focuses on how to administer and interpret CASAS assessments, how to place learners into appropriate education programs, how to assess learning gains, and how to link assessment to curriculum and instruction. The session covers how to target instruction to CASAS competencies and how to assess, monitor and certify learners’ progress in reading, math, and listening. At the end of the session, participants complete a certification activity and submit a training verification form that qualifies them to order and implement selected CASAS materials.

By virtue of being elected to that office, Snyder will serve on the Association's Executive Committee beginning January 1, 2006 and will ascend to the presidency on January 1, 2007. Snyder has been a member of Ohio ACTE since 1996 and currently serves as Chair of the Association's Legislative Committee.
