Summary of 1999 Funded State Improvement Grant Applications
August 1999 OHIO Abstract or Conceptual Framework for State Systemic Change
Ohio is seeking SIG funding to implement a different system of professional development from what is being used currently, and will recruit and align various professional development providers to address specific issues of the school districts. The SIG will focus on two aspects of learning: high academic achievement and socially acceptable behavior. The SIG will serve as a vehicle for promoting shared responsibility among partners at the state, regional, and local levels. Such shared responsibility is central to improving results for all students and sustaining targeted change long after the project ends. Two basic strategies will be employed by the SIG:
  • Partnership sites to demonstrate how districts can get the conditions for all children to learn at high levels. Partnership agreements with institutions of higher education (IHEs) to increase the quantity and competency of personnel required to meet student needs.
Anticipated outcomes of such partnerships, which reflect systems change or a change in the way district and building personnel do business, include:

powered by Google Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention: The Parent Connection Two of the biggest concerns parents have when they send their sons and daughters to college are whether they will be safe, and whether they will do well academically. Both of those concerns are legitimate, and both are closely related to alcohol and other drugs, whether used by the student or by their fellow students. So parents deserve to know what schools are doing to curb alcohol and other drug use, and college administrators must be prepared to answer tough questions about their alcohol and other drug prevention policies and programs. Heights Parent Center strengthens families and promotes the healthy development of children by providing parent education and fostering community among families with children from birth through age 10.
The vision of Heights Parent Center is to be a recognized, high quality, family-centered community asset that provides a safe, accessible environment for all families to play and learn together. The Center offers opportunities for families to make connections that help support a healthy community and is an active partner with other community organizations in responding to the diverse needs of families. Background: Heights Parent Center (HPC) is a family education, resource and support center located in the Millikin Early Childhood Center in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. It is one of many preventive family support programs that have emerged across the nation. Most parents will not seek formal help for the day-to-day challenges with their children because of the stigma involved. However, when they can easily access resources to strengthen their parenting, and reduce their stress and isolation, the positive results can dramatically improve the functioning of the family and the ultimate outcomes for the children. The family support movement is based on the belief that all parents want to be "good" parents and helps them use available resources to meet that goal. Centers such as Heights Parent Center are not intended only for "at risk" families, but understand that

Helping History Day
How to help the History Day program at the state or district level
There are many ways that you can support the National History Day in Ohio program at the district or state level.
  • Mailings: Communicating with teachers throughout the year means many mailings! Depending on the time of year, there is a good deal of assembling information packets and mailings. Write your elected officials: We need constituents to communicate with their elected officials about the benefits of the program and the sponsoring organizations. Judge: Although you won’t be able to judge the category that your child participates in, you may be able to judge in a different category or division. Recruit other judges: Ask people in your community to help by judging at your district event
Contact the state coordinator or your district coordinator to sign up to help out the program. Submit a suggestion to the History Day staff
Do you have an idea on how to make History Day or the History Day events better? We change many things every year based on student, teacher and parent input. While there are some things that we can’t change (the rules and themes are decided by National History Day), there are many things that we can!
