A Parent Mentor is the parent of a child with a disability employed to help school districts and families by providing training, support, and information services. The mission of Ohio Parent Mentors is to provide the necessary support and resources to families of children with disabilities and the professionals who serve them. Ohio Parent Mentor projects are funded through grants from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). All Parent Mentor services are provided to families free of charge. What is a Highly Qualified Teacher Under the Reauthorized IDEA? The new Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) formulates basic requirements needed for a teacher to be deemed highly qualified to teach special education. These standards correlate to the highly qualified standards of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The requirements are These special education requirements to become highly qualified follow the same subject matter requirements for general educators under NCLB. In fact, a teacher deemed highly qualified under the new IDEA is also highly qualified under NCLB. The new IDEA also outlines additional requirements for special educators who either teach to alternate achievement standards or teach multiple subjects. These teachers can meet the requirements to be deemed highly qualified in 2 ways.
  • A teacher may meet NCLB requirements applied to general elementary school teachers or, if teaching above an elementary position, possess subject matter knowledge appropriate to the level of instruction they provide. The appropriate level of subject matter knowledge is determined by the state. (Applies to teachers of middle school and above)
