"We got a few come in here, but they don't whisper too loudly against President Bush and his war policy because most of us are behind him solidly," said Vass, a career Navy man who participated in the 1962 missile crisis blockade of Cuba and later served in Vietnam.

Ohio city under martial law, hundreds arrested
2,000 demonstrate against police violence in Cincinnati
By Barry Grey 16 April 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Some 1,000 people attended the funeral April 14 for Timothy Thomas, a nineteen-year-old black youth gunned down the previous Saturday in the latest in a series of fatal shootings of blacks by police in the southern Ohio city of Cincinnati. Following the service, mourners joined with hundreds protesting the police killing outside the church and marched peacefully through the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood where Thomas was shot. Some 2,000 people of all races participated in the march. The killing of Thomas, who was unarmed, sparked three days of rioting, centered in the impoverished, mostly black Over-the-Rhine district that adjoins downtown Cincinnati. Mayor Charlie Luken declared a state of emergency April 12 and imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew throughout the city of 331,000. A massive police presence was bolstered by state troopers and sheriff's deputies, who carried out hundreds of arrests and used rubber bullets and bean bags fired from shotguns to put down protests and scattered looting. On Sunday Luken eased the curfew somewhat, ordering the streets to be cleared by 11 PM.

    BIG BOX ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDIES
Download a PDF version of this page Below are summaries and links to key studies that examine the impact of Wal-Mart and other large retail chains and, in some cases, the benefits of locally owned businesses. For ease of use, we've organized these studies into the following categories (though they do not all fit neatly into one category):
  • City Costs
  • State Costs
Because many of their employees do not earn enough to make ends meet, states are reporting high costs associated with providing healthcare (Medicaid) and other public assistance to big-box employees.
  • Economic Impact of Local Businesses vs. Chains
Studies have found that locally owned stores generate much greater benefits for the local economy than national chains.

  • These studies look at how the arrival of a big-box retailer displaces sales at existing businesses, which must then downsize or close. This results in job losses and declining tax revenue, which some of these studies quantify.

  • Studies have found that big-box retailers, particularly Wal-Mart, are depressing wages and benefits for retail employees.

DNC to Investigate Ohio Voting Irregularities
By Darryl Fears Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 7, 2004; Page A10 The leader of the Democratic National Committee announced yesterday that he will launch an investigation into voting irregularities in Ohio, where lines snaked outside some inner-city polling places on Election Day and provisional ballots were sometimes in short supply. Terence R. McAuliffe, chairman of the DNC, said the aim of "this comprehensive study is not to contest the results of the 2004 election, but to help ensure that every eligible vote cast is truly counted."
