Loss of major hub cities could cripple Internet, study suggests
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A terrorist attack or other disaster that destroyed key telecommunications equipment in major cities would disrupt the Internet much like severe storms at airline hubs ties up the nation's air traffic, a new study suggests. Researchers at Ohio State University conducted experiments in which they simulated what would happen if a disaster crippled major nodes of the Internet – places that house the equipment where Internet traffic is collected and distributed. The results showed that major cities that serve as Internet nodes would continue to have network access in most scenarios, although it would probably be much less functional. But smaller and medium sized cities that link to the Internet through these major hub cities could be disconnected from the entire network. "The Internet functions much like our air traffic system," said Tony Grubesic, who co-authored the study as a doctoral student in geography at Ohio State. "If weather stops or delays traffic in a major airport hub, like Chicago's O'Hare, air passengers throughout the country may feel the effects – even if they are not traveling to Chicago. The same is true of the Internet hubs. They can affect Internet traffic through much of the country."

Forum Resources » Ohio part of public education study Sue Hagan Funding for preschool for every Ohio child, an expanded Head Start program to enroll every eligible child and home health-care visits for every poor family are among the items on a wish list enunciated last week by advocates for early childhood education. A forum, held at the Fawcett Center at Ohio State University on Sept. 9, will help direct the work of a new national task force on public education. The Institute for America's Future and the Center for American Progress, two nonpartisan research and education institutes based in Washington, D.C., assembled the task force to study successful strategies across the country that, as a whole, may lead to wholesale education reform. The task force is stopping in six cities nationwide to study different facets of education. In Columbus — the second stop on the tour — the focus was on early childhood education. Among the local speakers was state Superintendent Susan Tave Zelman. Pointing to a 25-percent difference between African-American and Caucasian students' graduation rates, Zelman said that learning for the very young is a key to improvement.

CLEVELAND LEADS OHIO IN INTERNET ACCESSIBILITY, STUDY FINDS
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cleveland leads the major Ohio cities in Internet network accessibility, according to a new study at Ohio State University. Cleveland was ranked 18th in the country in 2000, the only Ohio city in the top 30 nationally. Cincinnati was ranked 40th, Columbus was 43rd, Toledo was 85th, and Dayton 167th. Morton O'Kelly "The digital economy is built on accessibility to the Internet, and cities that have the most developed Internet infrastructure will have an economic advantage," said Morton O'Kelly , co-author of the study and a professor of geography at Ohio State O'Kelly conducted the study with Tony Grubesic, a former graduate student at Ohio State. Their results appear in the July issue of the journal

The State Climatology Office for Ohio
The State Climatology Office for Ohio strives to acquire, archive, process and disseminate all climate and weather information that is of value to public officials and organizations, corporations, research scientists, and private citizens of the state. The fact that there is a state climatology office is not widely known around Ohio and many of the requests are either from central Ohio or they are from other states, from persons that know of climate services in their home state. People come to this website because they are interested in finding Ohio climate data. The following web links will hopefully help you find such information. Many have free information but invariably the detailed and specific data needs that most people have will be available for a fee. Climate data is increasingly only available at cost, so appreciate the free sites listed in the second group.
    Major Climate Data Repositories
    • National Climatic Data Center . A wide variety of data can be purchased from the NCDC. It is the ONLY source for climate data admissible in court for legal cases. One of the most often requested forms of surface climate data available is:
Daily Local Climatological Data since 1996 for over 300 stations nationally and containing temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover and significant weather data, both daily and for certain periods of the day. Other types of data are also available from the same Local Climatological Data web link.
