Technology Standards for School Administrators
Technology Lessons from the Central Office
Leading Curriculum and Technology Use Curriculum Director Rick Tan rises early in the morning and checks his personal digital assistant (PDA) for the calendar of the day's events and appointments. He logs on and checks email and then syncs his computer to his PDA. Upon arriving in the office he moves his work to his office workstation, checks voice mail and email, and responds. His first appointment is an 8:30 a.m. budget meeting with some staff physically present and others connected via compressed video. The department budget is projected, and changes are made simultaneously on the screen and on the server via wireless connectivity. Participants interact via voice and video and by sharing data and text using a collaborative software package. Everyone leaves the meeting with new budget figures at their fingertips whether on a laptop or PDA. After a quick calendar check, Mr. Tan proceeds down the hall to his next scheduled appointment, a district accountability meeting. District program leaders, participating at local and remote sites, download district performance reports, analyze the data in smaller focus groups, and report out areas of acute district concern. As participants brainstorm various plans of action to address areas of identified need, Rick uses concept-mapping software to construct an organizing framework for the ideas generated. Following the meeting, he posts the plans for review and comment on the district intranet within an online discussion area prepared earlier in the week.

AEL Technology in Education Teachers >> 170 Ideas and Resources 170 Ideas and Resources for Teachers Integrating Technology into Planning and Curriculum
compiled by Virginia Seale Last updated: June 13, 2002 Technology is not new. It has been incorporated throughout history as men and women worked to solve problems using available tools. In the early days of mankind, technology was used to move rocks; today we move ideas and information, as well as rocks and rockets. The following collection of activities and Web sites is intended to take some of the mystery out of technology and show how technology is interesting, diverse, fun, and absolutely relevant to our lives. Select a project for each day of the school year, or work through the collection at your own pace. Some of these ideas broaden the knowledge of teachers and some can be used with students. Some suggested Internet sites link to wonderful resources for classroom use. Finding the best way to integrate technology for students will take time, exploration, and experimentation on the part of teachers. Enjoy the adventure.

    http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te1000.htm
Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology Use
ISSUE: Whether technology should be used in schools is no longer the issue in education. Instead, the current emphasis is ensuring that technology is used effectively to create new opportunities for learning and to promote student achievement. Educational technology is not, and never will be, transformative on its own, however. It requires the assistance of educators who integrate technology into the curriculum, align it with student learning goals, and use it for engaged learning projects. "Teacher quality is the factor that matters most for student learning," note Darling-Hammond and Berry (1998). Therefore, professional development for teachers becomes the key issue in using technology to improve the quality of learning in the classroom. Lack of professional development for technology use is one of the most serious obstacles to fully integrating technology into the curriculum (Fatemi, 1999; Office of Technology Assessment, 1995; Panel on Educational Technology, 1997). But traditional sit-and-get training sessions or one-time-only workshops have not been effective in making teachers comfortable with using technology or adept at integrating it into their lesson plans. Instead, a well-planned, ongoing professional development program that is tied to the school's curriculum goals, designed with built-in evaluation, and sustained by adequate financial and staff support is essential if teachers are to use technology appropriately to promote learning for all students in the classroom.
