All children start using a computer at a young age and as such, touch typing, although an extremely useful skill, is not routinely taught in schools. Shorthand, once universally taught to would-be office workers, as largely fallen out of general use. Students can now take subjects like GCSE applied business, which covers all aspects of how businesses are organised, including human resources and finances, such as preparing accounts and wages, administration including handling mail, record-keeping, organising meetings. They say when one door closes another door opens. That was certainly the case for Vicki Baker of Picton when repetitive strain injury (RSI) and a pinched nerve put an end to her hospitality career. “I’d always liked computers so I went and did a computing course at NMIT,” she says. Because Vicki’s medical condition prevented her from pursuing office work involving typing, she decided to further her knowledge into the technical side of computers. After completing computing at NMIT as well as two additional courses through correspondence study, Vicki approached the IT department at Marlborough College for Girls for work experience. This eventually led to paid work at the school, and Vicki then approached Blenheim company PC Media 2003 Ltd, where she gained employment.
