Information Sources in Oceanography
SCOPE
General sources in all areas of chemical, physical and geological oceanography and ocean/marine engineering are covered. Marine biology and fisheries information is excluded. Naval architecture and shipbuilding are also excluded. Please note that this Start Here includes materials located in UBC Library. Materials housed in departmental Reading Rooms in Oceanography and Human Ecology are excluded.
WHERE TO FIND INFORMATION ON OCEANOGRAPHY
Materials on oceanography can be located in several libraries at UBC, depending on the specific subject area in question. A major division is made between materials in the physical, chemical and engineering aspects of oceanography. These materials are housed in the Main Library with the rest of the collections in the physical sciences. Materials about fisheries and marine life are housed in the Woodward Biomedical Library. Maps and atlases are located primarily in the Map Library. The Map Library holds detailed hydrographic charts for most parts of the world and maps showing characteristics such as temperatures, currents and resources. Please enter the Map Library using the outside door (ground level) in the Main Library's south wing, to the right of the building's main entrance. Unless stated otherwise, all materials are located in the Science and Engineering Division Reference collection, in the Main Library, south wing. Materials in other areas of the UBC Library are indicated as follows:

AquaNIC Email Contacts for the United States of America Summary: An American directory of individuals in the field of aquaculture, the AquaNIC Email Contacts site is a service of the Aquaculture Network Information Center (AquaNIC). The center, and its divisions, are maintained by the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University and provide a gateway to worldwide resources in aquaculture. Users will find an alphabetical listing of the fifty states, and listings of aquaculture contacts are found by selecting the state of choice. Entries within the records provide: name of individual (first, last); e-mail address; and area of interest. Listings within states are alphabetized for easy evaluation and use. A select group of entries will feature a biographical data sheet, providing a business address, educational information, as well as research and/or teaching specialities. The e-mail directory is maintained by Mark Einstein, Department of Animal Sciences; Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

I. Introduction
This Collections Policy Statement deals with science and technology as subjects and attempts to provide a framework both for supporting current strengths of the Library's collections and identifying appropriate extensions and fields of concentration. In order to make the task of considering such broad topics as science and technology more manageable, the statement has been divided into chapters which deal with logical groupings of subclasses within classes Q, Science and T, Technology of the Library of Congress Classification. The first of these chapters describes the history of both science and technology in order to focus on the parallel and interactive nature of these fields. The succeeding chapters deal in turn with the various branches of science and technology as set forth in classes Q and T . The complete list of the eleven chapters comprising this statement appears below in Section III

OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF SCIENCE
Bachelor of Science Ocean and Earth Science R.E. Johnson, Advisor Students in the ocean and earth science program focus on the global systems that control environmental conditions. They also learn to develop solutions to complex environmental problems by working in multidisciplinary teams. All majors in the department complete courses in the basic sciences and mathematics, core courses in earth systems science, and a capstone field research experience. In addition, students complete a suite of specialty courses according to one of the following emphases. Oceanography Emphasis The oceanography emphasis is designed for students considering graduate work or employment in the pure and applied fields of oceanography. Students select specialty courses in one of these subdisciplines: biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, or physical oceanography. If students select the biological subdiscipline, they are strongly encouraged to minor in Biology and select BIOL 316, 417 and 442. If students select the chemical subdiscipline, they are strongly encouraged to minor in Chemistry and select CHEM 307-309, 312-314, 321, and 322. If students select the physical subdiscipline, they are strongly encouraged to minor in Applied Mathematics and select MATH 312, 316U, 317, and 401. Geology Emphasis The geology emphasis is designed for students with a wide range of professional goals in the sciences, engineering, business, and the arts. Students considering graduate work or employment in pure and applied fields of geology, including environmental geology, geological oceanography, hydrogeology, geophysics, and geochemistry, should build their backgrounds to support certification as a professional geologist (see later information). Students with a strong interest in geological applications of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools should consider the geology emphasis with a minor in geography; the certificate program in remote sensing for coastal environmental analysis (see later description) also emphasizes this area of study.

Abstract: Our program produces teaching materials used by students and teachers at all levels. They include teachers of science, mathematics, and technology, students in elementary, middle, and high schools, and students and professors in colleges and universities. Our goal is to make widely known the results of the TOPEX/POSEIDON and Jason missions and related oceanographic experiments such as the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. All material is distributed through the web. This allows us to update the material quickly, and it allows us to reach a much larger group than we could reach with printed material. Jason mission work Our program is designed to bring the ocean to the classroom. Our work is organized into five tasks:
  • The continued development of a web site, OceanWorld (

It is the flagship meteorology department in the southeastern United States, offering degrees from the bachelor of science (BS) through the doctor of philosophy (PhD). The program at The Florida State University is considered to be one of the top five comprehensive meteorology programs in the nation. Members of the Department of Meteorology enjoy the benefits of advanced scientific equipment and a cooperative research environment with the departments of Mathematics and Oceanography, the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute (GFDI), and the School of Computational Science and Information Technology (CSIT). Scientific computations are handled on equipment ranging from PCs and Macintosh computers to networks of scientific workstations and a departmental supercomputer. A high speed network connects the department to campus and other supercomputer centers and research laboratories via a very fast campus backbone and excellent Internet connectivity to the outside world.
