Distance Learning Partners
The Navy College Program Distance Learning Partner program was developed in 2000 in response to the increasing need for Sailors to have access to higher education in their pursuit of a GED and/or college degree.
Since its inception, the program has continued to develop new partnerships with colleges and universities to offer rating-related degrees via distance learning to Sailors across the globe. Each degree offered by the program’s partner institutions makes maximum use of military professional training and experience to fulfill degree requirements, making it easier and faster for Sailors to achieve their educational goals."
The Navy College Program Distance Learning Partner schools are chosen by a Navy selection board consisting of senior Navy leadership and Department of Defense civilian educators, to provide specific degree programs for Navy ratings and Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) that correlate with different job categories in the Navy.
Degrees listed are: AA (Associate of Arts), AS (Associate of Science), AAS (Associate of Arts and Science), BGS (Bachelor of General Science), BS (Bachelor of Science).

Tools available to help you locate oceanographic data on the WWW are described below:
  • Global Change MASTER DIRECTORY (MD) provided by NASA.
    MD is a search tool for finding oceanographic datasets available worldwide. While its focus is on datasets related to global change, this includes a great many datasets of general oceanographic interest. MD accesses information on the holdings of many data centers, which makes it a logical place to start before exploring individual data centers.
    Note to students at URI GSO Bay Campus:
    GSO Technical Report No. 95-1, entitled "Drinking from the Firehose: Global Change Datasets Available through Internet" provides guidance on the use of Master Directory.
  • The Oceanographic Society is developing a Distributed Ocean Data System, (DODS) to aid in the identification and sharing of oceanographic data, and which will be integrated with Master Directory.

In order to foster and engender resource sharing,, the Information Management Committee of the NATO Research Technology Agency has developed a science, technology and research network (STARNET). The purpose of this network is to facilitate access to information elements existing worldwide, in terms of science, technology and overall research. STARNET is designed as a virtual library for these information elements; it is a database of web-based data sources, which will allow comprehensive and sophisticated searches. Initial incorporation of web-based information resources began in 2003. Currently only non-classified information is being considered. There are seven thematic or scientific areas designated as nodes of the STARNET; namely
  • Aerospace and Aerospace-Related Research Information Node (ARIN) Defense Against Terrorism Node (DTIN) Environmental and Biological Sciences Node (EBSIN) Information Science Node (INSCIN) Land-Based Operations Node (LBON) Naval, Marine and Sea-based Operations Node (NAVMAS)

... ASFA and Oceanic Abstracts Classification Codes The classification codes and descriptions are broad subject headings that are specific to various databases. The codes appear in the Classification, CL=, field in an IDS record and, due to the interdisciplinary nature of much of the material covered, one record may have several classifications, e.g.:
CL: Classification
Q1 01442 Population dynamics; Q1 01382 Ecological techniques and apparatus
Each code is prefaced by another two-character code that indicates in which database or equivalent printed abstracts journal, the record originally appeared. These two-character codes correspond to the components of the ASFA series as follows:
Q5 = ASFA 3: Aquatic Pollution and Environmental Quality
Q3 = ASFA Aquaculture
To find a suitable code(s) to use when searching the ASFA databases, use the 'Find' feature on your browser and look for relevant words. When you have found a code or codes, you can search for these by entering them in the 'Words in any field' query box, e.g.: cl=01101
cl=02243
cl=(01601 or 01604)
Each subject is broadly categorized into
  • General
  • Biology
  • Ecology
  • Fisheries General Aspects

The Marine Technology curriculum is designed to provide the practical skills and academic background essential for success in the area of marine scientific support. The Marine Technology student will become proficient in the knowledge and skills required of a scientific support technician, through both practical training aboard ship as well as in the classroom. The Marine Technology curriculum prepares individuals to use and maintain sophisticated equipment such as electronic navigation devices, physical and chemical measuring instruments, sampling devices, and data acquisition and reduction systems aboard ocean-going and smaller vessels Graduates of this program will be qualified to work in the following areas: general applied oceanography; data acquisition and reduction; environmental monitoring; geophysical exploration; field and laboratory biology; water analysis; water and wastewater treatment laboratory analysis; nuclear power plant environmental work; fishing gear construction and repair; small engine maintenance and repair; fishing; marine salvage; and other marine scientific activities. Employment opportunities are available with various state and federal agencies, and with private businesses and industries associated with marine science and research.

This report has been reviewed by a group other than the authors according to procedures approved by a Report Review Committee consisting of members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit, self-perpetuating society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. Upon the authority of the charter granted to it by the Congress in 1863, the Academy has a mandate that requires it to advise the federal government on scientific and technical matters. Dr. Frank Press is president of the National Academy of Sciences. The National Academy of Engineering was established in 1964, under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences, as a parallel organization of outstanding engineers. It is autonomous in its administration and in the selection of its members, sharing with the National Academy of Sciences the responsibility for advising the federal government. The National Academy of Engineering also sponsors engineering programs aimed at meeting national needs, encourages education and research, and recognizes the superior achievements of engineers.
