Northeastern Gulf of Mexico Chemical Oceanography and Hydrography Study: Synthesis Report BACKGROUND:
The Minerals Management Service (MMS) Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf Region sponsored a workshop on 5-7 April 1994 in Tallahassee, FL, to assess the knowledge of the circulation over the shelf and slope of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and to provide recommendations on studies needed to fill gaps in knowledge. MMS then designed the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico Physical Oceanography Program (NEGOM). This summary presents the main results of the NEGOM Chemical Oceanography and Hydrography Study. OBJECTIVES: (1) To develop and conduct an effective and efficient oceanographic experimental design of research cruises over the NEGOM region at spatial and temporal scales sufficient to resolve seasonal variations of chemical oceanography and hydrographic properties. (2) To collect the ancillary data necessary to complement and analyze the data collected under objective 1. (3) To analyze the data to describe the vertical and horizontal spatial distributions and temporal variations of properties and the chemical, physical, or biological processes that contribute to the observed distributions. DESCRIPTION: The study area is bounded by 89°W on the west, the 10-m isobath inshore, 27.5°N on the southeast, and the 1000-m isobath offshore. Nine oceanographic research cruises were conducted aboard the

World Data Center (WDC) for Oceanography is one component of a global network of discipline subcenters that facilitate international exchange of scientific data. Originally established during the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, the World Data Center System functions under the guidance of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). WDC for Oceanography, Silver Spring, is collocated with, and operated by, the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). In accordance with principles set forth by ICSU, WDC for Oceanography acquires, catalogues, and archives data, publications, and data inventory forms and makes them available to requesters in the international scientific community. To improve user access, the WDC provides copies of data it receives to its counterparts, World Data Center for Oceanography (Obninsk, Russia) and World Data Center for Oceanography (Tianjin, China). Oceanographic data contributed to the WDC become automatically available to scientific investigators in any country. Thus, there can be no restrictions or limitations placed on data exchanged through the WDC system. However, for certain types of data, the exchange of inventories of available data in a WDC subcenter may be considered acceptable in lieu of the transfer of the actual data sets.

    Bulletin of the
    Bingham Oceanographic Collection
The Bulletin of the Bingham Oceanographic Collection published scientific articles and monographs on marine and freshwater organisms and oceanography. In the 1920s New York City businessman Harry Payne Bingham, a graduate of Yale, sponsored 3 oceanographic expeditions for fish and invertebrate specimens for his own private research collection. In 1927, Bingham established the Bulletin of the Bingham Oceanographic Collection to publish the research on his specimens. In 1930, Bingham donated the entire collection to the Yale Peabody Museum and set up the Bingham Oceanographic Foundation to continue the research in marine biology and oceanography, and to publish the results.
The series was merged with and continued in the Bulletin of the Peabody Museum of Natural History after Volume 19, Article 2 (1967). These publications are out of print; this listing is offered as an information service only.
