The physical oceanography group at UConn's Department of Marine Sciences includes four faculty members: Frank Bohlen James Edson Ed Monahan, and Jim O'Donnell . In addition, Heidi Dierssen is professor in residence with the department.
A common thread of their various research interests is an emphasis on understanding fluid dynamics in the coastal environment, but the collective expertise of the group touches on a wide range of physical oceanographic phenomena. As a result, M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in the department gain a broad exposure to the essential subdisciplines of physical oceanography in addition to their in-depth research training.

MARINE SCIENCE/BIOLOGY
Marine biologists examine the oceanic biosphere, the structure and function of individual organisms, and their community interrelationships. The University of Miami program places special emphasis on tropical and coral reef ecology, fisheries management, natural seafood toxicology, and the use of marine organisms as models for environmental stress and human disease. Courses in animal behavior, biotechnology, and mariculture are available as electives. Areas of Study: functional morphology and development, ecology, evolution, physiology, fisheries, animal behavior, biochemistry and genetics of marine plants and animals.
Special Courses:
  • Biology of Fishes
  • Biology of Marine Mammals
  • Marine Pollution
  • Field Oceanography
  • Mariculture
  • Behavior of Marine Organisms

For information on teaching faculty check the Marine Biology and Fisheries (MBF) graduate program at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Dr. Farmer , Dr. DiResta and Dr. Sullivan (not at RSMAS) are also part of the faculty.
Required Courses:
General Biology, Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, General Physiology, Ecology, Marine Biology, Chemical Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Solid and Fluid Earth, Calculus, University Physics, Principles of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry.

Welcome!
to the Memorial University of Newfoundland
We offer undergraduate programmes leading to degrees in physics or joint degrees in physics and a second discipline. Graduate programmes are offered at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. level in Atomic and Molecular physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Physical Oceanography. Experimental, theoretical and computational research topics include non-linear dynamics, membrane biophysics, polymer physics, magnetism, strongly correlated electron systems, optical and vibrational spectroscopy, atomic collision, ocean acoustics, and ocean circulation. There are facilities for high-perfomance computing; Raman, infrared, and Brillouin spectroscopy; fluoresence microscopy; wideline NMR spectroscopy; image analysis; etc. The Department operates helium and nitrogen liquefiers and a machine shop. Undergraduates gain experience with a wide range of computing resources. For example, the Microcomputer Physics Laboratory is used to explore topics in statistical analysis, mechanics, oscillations, waves and sound. Available programme electives include optics, astrophysics, introductory physical oceanography, fluid mechanics, and non-linear phenomena. Many physics students find summer employment with a research group.

Welcome to Marine Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill
Document Actions Welcome to the Marine Sciences Program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our Program shares the University's strong commitment to teaching, research and public service. We strive to quantitatively describe, understand and predict the processes that regulate marine systems and connect these to the other components of the Earth's System, to assess the significance of change in marine systems and its consequences for humans and other organisms. The Marine Sciences Program is comprised of two separate administrative units, the Department of Marine Sciences (MASC) in Chapel Hill and the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Morehead City.

Physical Oceanography at Memorial
I. Afanasyev D. Bourgault E. Demirov B. deYoung ... L. Zedel Located at the confluence of the cold, fresh Labrador Current coming from the north and the warm, saline Gulf Stream coming from the south, Newfoundland is one of the most exciting places in the world for the study of oceanography. It is located at a pivotal point in the world climate system, one of the most important regions for the exchange of heat between the tropical and polar regions. Newfoundland has a growing offshore oil industry operating in a region known for severe storms and frequented by icebergs. The once great Grand Banks fishery is now in a state of collapse. All of these factors make the understanding of the oceans around Newfoundland a matter of great economic and social importance. Ocean science studies have become a focus of research at Memorial University and activity is expected to accelerate over the coming years. The establishment of the Physical Oceanography Group in 1979 and its subsequent growth to a position of international standing demonstrates this commitment. The group offers programs leading to the M.Sc. and PhD degrees.
