Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Technical Report WHOI-89-10 (CRC-89-2), 31 pp., 1989 WHOI-T-89-007
The growing interest in coastal ocean processes during the last decade has accentuated the need for laboratory facilities where various aspects of the coastal ocean environment can be simulated under controlled conditions. The 17-meter flume, a re-circulating, temperature-controlled, seawater channel constructed in the Coastal Research Laboratory at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, was specifically designed for studies of biogeochemical and fluid-dynamical questions which can be adequately addressed in a steady-flow environment. Part I of a two-part report, this technical report provides comprehensive descriptions of the flume and associated instrumentation, examples of flume settings to achieve selected flow regimes, and detailed instructions for the use of this facility.

While ocean observations remain one of our principal missions, we have increasingly developed modeling expertise, both analytical and numerical, to support seagoing science and to better understand fundamental ocean processes. The seagoing groups have evolved into a number of technical and scientific groups having specialized equipment. Below we present some of our specialized research working groups:
The following list contains the present groups in our department:
This is a joint PO/AOPE entity which services the entire Institution and a large number of outside users, locally, nationally, and internationally. It is based largely in the Village, but uses the Clark South high bay for staging.
Upper Ocean Processes (UOP)
The primary focus of the Upper Ocean Processes Group is the study of physical processes in the upper ocean and at the air-sea interface using moored surface buoys equipped with meteorological and oceanographic sensors.

44. Oceanography
Dalhousie is a world leader in oceanographic research with stateof-the-art facilities. Training and funding is offered for PhD and MSc degrees in biological, chemical, geological and physical areas of oceanography.
http://www.dal.ca/~wwwocean/index.html
Welcome to Oceanography
at Dalhousie University The story of our Department is one of growth and accruing influence, both nationally and internationally, in the fields of oceanographic research and education. From a mere 10 faculty at its founding in 1971, we now number 19 full-time faculty, with many additional joint, cross and adjunct appointments. Research grants and contracts now exceed $6.0 Million per year, some 35% of the total research funds raised by the Faculty of Science. Arguably, we can be considered Canada's premier Department of Oceanography.
This increasing prominence is reflected in past and current housing of the Canadian offices of large international projects, including the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), and the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS). In the early 1990s we were fortunate to house one of the first Networks of Centers for Excellence, known as OPEN (Open Production Enhancement Network), and today we are breaking new ground with the CFI-funded Center for Marine Environmental Prediction , which aims at a predictive understanding of changes in the marine environment through both modelling and new technology.

I am currently looking for graduate students to work on theoretical and computational problems related to shear instabilities and mixing associated with tidal flow over a sill and in large amplitude internal solitary waves, internal waves with cores, nonlinear Kelvin and Poincare waves in lakes, stochastic modelling of internal waves and instability of subcritical flow over topography. There may also be funding available to support a student working as part of a collaborative project studying physical processes in Lake Erie. Officially entitled "Inventory Catalogue of Hawai`i's Coral Reefs" the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative Computer Interactive Bibliography (HCRIB) is a project of the Hawai`i Wildlife Fund (Principal Investigators, Carl J. Berg and Hannah J. Barnard) in collaboration with AECOS , Inc. (Eric B. Guinther, Joann Fisher, and Hilary Maybaum). This project has been supported by a grant from NOAA / U. S. Coral Reef Initiative The HCRIB is an EndNote Plus bibliographic reference data base which provides reference listings of surveys, studies, technical reports, atlases, and the like on subjects ranging from physical oceanography, biology, taxonomy, water quality, ecology, and reef resources for the main Hawaiian Islands. In gathering references for inclusion, the editors have placed particular emphasis on technical reports (essentially unpublished reports) by corporations, consultants, students, organizations, and government agencies for the reason that these types of studies and surveys are most difficult to track through standard bibliographic data bases. Also, far greater numbers of field surveys and site specific observations are available from this "gray" literature than anywhere else. References listed in this database are limited to marine environments found around the main Hawaiian Islands from the shore out to a depth of about 60 feet. A similar data base for Hawai`i fresh and brackish waters is under development (see
