Physical Oceanography Most oceanographers try to think of the world's oceans as one giant system, collectively known as the global ocean. But before space travel and the inventio of satellites, it was very hard to actually observe the oceans on such a large scale. Pictures of the global ocean from space have given oceanographers important information about ocean currents, temperatures, and other properties. Satellites collect information around the clock and feed it back to earth and individual laboratories and classrooms in real time. This innovation has revolutionized oceanography and given researchers important information about weather and climate, circulation, and environmental problems, such as global warming, global circulation, the world's fisheries decline, and harmful algal blooms. Perhaps more than any other group of oceanographers, physical oceanographers have benefited from satellite technology. Because they study the movement of the oceans and the forces that cause motion, such as winds, waves, and tides, they must look at the ocean from a "big picture" perspective. Shipboard measurements and the development of instruments such as computer programmable buoys that can be left at sea for long periods of time were huge advances for the field of physical oceanography and continue to be important tools, but satellites offer perspectives that early oceanographers may never have dreamed of. Imagine the discoveries Benjamin Franklin, the first person to plot the course of the Gulf Stream, could have made if he'd had access to satellite data!

URI Graduate School of Oceanography
Physical Oceanographer Awarded
$279,000 for Hurricane Research
The two-year grant supports a program of work designed to further improve the GFDL/URI model and to carefully evaluate the improvements for possible operational implementation during the 2004-2005 hurricane seasons. In addition, the URI model will be introduced into the operational GFDL model used for hurricane forecasting in the East Pacific. The URI component of the computer model takes ocean dynamics into account to improve the forecasting of hurricane intensity.
"This grant will allow us to continue our research efforts toward improving the operational hurricane forecast system," said Ginis. "It will be conducted in active collaboration with NOAA scientists, building directly upon our successful joint research program. "Our main goal in this project," continued Ginis, "is to better understand and describe in our hurricane forecast model the physical processes causing the extreme winds and heavy rain that lead to death and to damage amounting to $5 billion annually in the United States."

Student Info Research About Us ... Directory Physical Oceanography Physical Oceanography is the study of the physical processes in the ocean and the interaction of the ocean with the atmosphere. Physical oceanographers in our department study currents at the surface and in the deep ocean, water mass formation, and the role of the ocean in weather and climate. We also study the heat budget of the ocean including solar heating, evaporation, infrared radiation into and out of the sea, the transport of heat and salt by currents, and the formation of sea ice. The goal of our work is to understand and predict processes such as , the role of the ocean in climate and the ice ages, currents in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere, and physical processes along continental shelves. In doing our work we construct elaborate numerical models of the circulation , and we analyse data collected from instruments on ships and satellites.
