Seafriends - Oceanography index
Oceanography is the science that studies the world's oceans, its waters and depths, how they move and how they play a part in the whole of our planet. In this section you can learn more about the sea and how it affects life. The sea is not just a big bucket of salty water, but a living system that controls many aspects of this planet, and thus your life too. This section forms the basis for understanding how our planet works.
introduction
Oceanography covers all we know about the sea, its formation, geology, mineralogy, extraction, fisheries, biology and much more. For this web site we have made a conscious selection. If you are in a hurry, read this first. (located on this page) (3 pages) oceans The world's oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface. At places they are as deep as the tallest mountains. Read more about their size, surface distribution, origin, evolution, features, crust, tectonic plate movement and more. (14 pages) ocean properties The salt water has important properties for life in the seas, properties that influence the circulation of the ocean water. Read more about its temperature, seasons, density and productivity. (8 pages) waves Waves are caused by the wind blowing over the ocean's surface. They promote the exchange of gases between the ocean and the atmosphere and bring water movement to coastal habitats. They are responsible for the shape of our coasts and the formation of dunes and beaches. Waves can also destroy. Tsunamis and mega tsunamis are special waves. In this chapter you'll find all you need to know about waves. (14 pages)

REGISTER NOW: Open Science Meeting on HABs and Stratification SCIENCE PLAN A Joint SCOR-IOC Programme of International Co-operative Research on HABs in Marine and Brackish Waters GEOHAB Mission: Foster international co-operative research on HABs in ecosystem types sharing common features, comparing the key species involved and the oceanographic processes that influence their population dynamics. GEOHAB is a Plan for Co-ordinated Scientific Research and Co-operation to Develop International Capabilities for Assessment, Prediction and Mitigation The GEOHAB Strategy The approach of the GEOHAB Programme is comparative, from the cellular to the ecosystem level. GEOHAB fosters research that is interdisciplinary, focusing on the important interactions among biological, chemical, and physical processes. GEOHAB also fosters research that is multifaceted as the problems are complex and interactions and processes occur on a broad range of scales. Finally, GEOHAB research should be international in scope to encompass the global issues of HAB events.

112. Oceanography
Dalhousie is a world leader in oceanographic research with stateof-the-art facilities. Training and funding is offered for PhD and MSc degrees in biological, chemical, geological and physical areas of oceanography.
http://www.dal.ca/~wwwocean/index.html
Welcome to Oceanography
at Dalhousie University The story of our Department is one of growth and accruing influence, both nationally and internationally, in the fields of oceanographic research and education. From a mere 10 faculty at its founding in 1971, we now number 19 full-time faculty, with many additional joint, cross and adjunct appointments. Research grants and contracts now exceed $6.0 Million per year, some 35% of the total research funds raised by the Faculty of Science. Arguably, we can be considered Canada's premier Department of Oceanography.
This increasing prominence is reflected in past and current housing of the Canadian offices of large international projects, including the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), and the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS). In the early 1990s we were fortunate to house one of the first Networks of Centers for Excellence, known as OPEN (Open Production Enhancement Network), and today we are breaking new ground with the CFI-funded Center for Marine Environmental Prediction , which aims at a predictive understanding of changes in the marine environment through both modelling and new technology.

Phoenician colonies and voyages,

Homers conception of the world during the Heroic era,

Herodotus map of world, modified from The Challenger Reports (summary), 1895 Aristotle modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds). " I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."
