Oceanography school accepting proposals for Endeavor
By Tamar Weinberg Published: Thursday, January 20, 2005 01/20/05 - The University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography is now accepting project proposals for next year's voyages on the Endeavor research vessel.
According to the GSO website, the purpose of the Endeavor is to educate Rhode Islanders about the marine environment and provide a research tool for scientists.
The GSO, located in the URI Bay Campus, manages the Rhode Island Endeavor Program Members (RIEP), which is responsible for allocating funds towards expeditions on the vessel. Members of the RIEP are trying to plan ahead for the new fiscal year, which begins on July 1, by organizing the ship's schedule before the program is granted state funding.
Jeffrey Callahan, the Director of Facilities at the GSO, said that the state has a special allocation of funding for the vessel each year. He said that last year, the state awarded the RIEP $500,000.
"We don't have the money yet for this fiscal year," he said. "We want to have all the proposals ready so we can allocate our funding."

University of Hawaii-Manoa oceanographer Ed Laws, who has been involved in a series of discoveries about the ocean ecosystem off Oahu, will join Louisiana State University on Jan. 1 as dean of the School of Coast and Environment. "Our loss is their gain," said UH oceanographer Dave Karl. "Ed Laws is arguably one of the most distinguished marine scientists at UH today." The two established a long-term study of the impact of climate variability on ecosystems. They and their colleagues have been investigating an open ocean site called Station Aloha about 60 miles north of Oahu with monthly trips since 1988. Laws, chairman of the UH-Manoa oceanography department, was recently awarded a five-year federal grant of more than $1.3 million a year for research on how marine phenomena could harm or improve human health. After 30 years on the UH faculty, he said, "It's not something you just walk away from." But he said the Louisiana School of Coast and Environment "seems like an exciting place to go" with a huge new building for faculty, a major investment in marine programs and a lot of interest in coastal and environmental issues. The recent Ocean Commission report addressed problems related to the Gulf Coast and Mississippi River, Laws noted.

    Oceanography's New Catch: Roving Blobs
    By RICHARD MONASTERSKY
The latest beasts discovered in the Atlantic won't munch unwary swimmers or swallow luxury liners, but they may wreak havoc on French farmers and other landlubbers across Europe. The newfound creatures are an oceanographic phenomenongiant patches of warm or cold water that drift slowly around the North Atlantic and may alter European weather. Two Florida researchers identified these climatic critters by studying sea surface temperature records from 1948 through 1992. During that period, 14 of these temperature anomalies developed and roved the ocean basin, report Donald V. Hansen of the University of Miami and Hugo F. Bezdek of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Miami. They describe their work in the April 15 Journal of Geophysical Research "I think this is a seminal paper," comments oceanographer James J. O'Brien of Florida State University in Tallahassee. "They have identified a very important mode of ocean variability." Hansen and Bezdek found that the large warm and cold blobs measured hundreds or thousands of kilometers across and typically had a lifetime of 3 to 10 years. Although the vertical thickness of these patches remains unknown, measurements made by ships passing through them suggest that they may reach depths of 400 meters.

    Limnology and Oceanography Bulletin
The Limnology and Oceanography Bulletin is published quarterly and contains up to 3 peer-reviewed Articles per issue, Letters to the Bulletin , and ASLO News (information for the ASLO membership). click here
    Articles
Articles for the Bulletin are short, should be of broad interest to the entire ASLO membership (and outside readers as well), and may cover such diverse topics as: new directions or methods in aquatic science; new findings on, or interpretations of a major topic; or political and educational issues/approaches. In this respect, some may even be a bit controversial, but new ideas are seldom embraced without some controversy. Thus, these are not articles for Limnology and Oceanography dealing with specific research findings, but still must be scientifically (or, educationally, etc) sound as judged by the peer-review process. It is strongly recommended that you contact the Editor ( bulletin-editor@aslo.org ) to go over your ideas for an article so that it conforms with the Bulletin style and content.
    Letters
Letters to the Bulletin should be either comments or responses to Articles, or pleas to the community about some aquatic science or political (e.g., funding for science) issue that you feel should be addressed.

The series highlights the activities of Environmental Health Sciences and Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Centers. The first article in the series appeared in volume 101, number 7. Stationed on the white sands of Virginia Key overlooking Biscayne Bay, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences is home to the University of Miami's Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center. The center is jointly funded by the NIEHS and the University of Miami, and serves as a focal point for marine-related health issues for the temperate United States, Central and South America, and the Caribbean basin. The center plays a leading role in research on natural seafood toxins, and with the advent of seafood safety legislation in early 1995, research at the center is critical in providing a science-based approach to seafood safety.

NASA takes control of new oceanography spacecraft
    NASA/JPL NEWS RELEASE

    Posted: April 28, 2002
Jason 1's oceanography mission to monitor global climate interactions between the sea and atmosphere reached another major milestone this past week with the successful handover of day-to-day operations from the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. With the handover, JPL is now responsible for around-the-clock real-time monitoring of Jason 1's health and status, and for generating and uploading weekly stored command sequences to the spacecraft. These sequences contain data for mission planning, payload commanding, navigation, ground station acquisition and routine maintenance functions. The French Space Agency's Satellite Control Center in Toulouse, France, will continue to perform spacecraft engineering and navigation tasks. Both organizations will be jointly responsible for processing mission science data. "Jason's measurement performance to date has been excellent," said Dr. Lee-Lueng Fu, Jason project scientist at JPL. "The early mission phases have been very smooth. This success is due in large part to the hard work and outstanding cooperation between the U.S. and French teams, who continue to work together to leverage experience and efficiencies gleaned from a decade of joint Topex/Poseidon operations. We look forward to continuing to work with the French to establish routine mission operations." Much like its Topex/Poseidon predecessor, the Jason program's shared operations management approach is designed to maximize efficiencies and make the most of the two space agencies' differing program roles and expertise. The French Space Agency managed Jason 1 satellite development, engineering and delivery from the French aerospace company Alcatel, so the program's early post-launch checkout phases were conducted by the French. NASA, by contrast, is responsible for two of the mission's three ground tracking stations in Wallops Island, Va., and Poker Flats, Alaska, (the other is in Aussaguel, France), so JPL has responsibility for oversight of day-to-day routine mission operations.
