Dear Oceanography Society Members: We are very happy to announce that a long term agreement has been reached by ASLO, AGU and TOS that will provide for a joint co-sponsored Ocean Sciences Meeting during even years, beginning in 2006. It represents a cooperative effort that will help unify the ocean sciences and related communities, thus furthering interdisciplinary research and cooperation. The Ocean Sciences Meeting will cover the spectrum of marine studies including, research, technology, engineering, industry, public policy and education. Development of the scientific program is the responsibility of the Program Committee, which will include members from each society and will change from meeting to meeting. Members of the ocean sciences community are encouraged to submit proposals for special sessions approximately nine months prior to the Ocean Sciences Meeting. BBC News science reporter, in Washington DC
Warming oceans should contribute to sea-level rise Scientists say they have "compelling" evidence that ocean warming over the past 40 years can be linked to the industrial release of carbon dioxide.
US researchers compared the rise in ocean temperatures with predictions from climate models and found human activity was the most likely cause. In coming decades, the warming will have a dramatic impact on regional water supplies, they predict. Details of the study were released at a major science meeting in Washington DC. The conference is the annual gathering of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). 'High confidence' "This is perhaps the most compelling evidence yet that global warming is happening right now and it shows that we can successfully simulate its past and likely future evolution," said lead author Tim Barnett, of the climate research division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California. "If you take this data and combine it with a decade of earlier results, the debate about whether or not there is a global warming signal here and now is over at least for rational people."

What can students learn about oceanography in land-locked Kansas? Plenty, according to Olathe District Schools science teacher Sarah Coddington, who teaches a pilot course in the subject at Olathe North High School. The pilot course is a small-scale version of a lab- and field-based oceanography course that she will teach next fall. The course is one of several newly developed courses included in the district's Earth Science Frontiers Program that will be housed at Olathe North. The school's science wing is being renovated to include the addition of a marine science lab, where students can study marine and aquatic life hands-on through various salt and freshwater tanks. In the marine lab, students will study microorganisms, like plankton. "Plankton make up the base of the food chain and are the energy source of the ocean," Coddington said. "Students will be conducting research on the physical properties of water. For example, if we change the salinity (saltiness) of the water, what effect does that have on plankton?"

    About the speaker:
Professor George Veronis is one of the world's most eminent GFD experts and physical oceanographers, with a career spanning fifty years, and more than 150 papers in leading journals. His work has involved theoretical
modelling of fluid dynamics applied to oceans, atmospheres and stars. His publications from the 1950s and 1960s remain highly cited, and his modern-day work continues to have a significant impact in fluid mechanics and physical oceanography. Recently George has made major contributions to our knowledge of oceanic mixing and the global thermohaline circulation. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Sciences and was the winner of the inaugural Scripps Institution of Oceanography R. and B. Cody Award in Ocean Science.

    Cutting-edge oceanography helps scientists understand
climate change on Earth (and other planets)
MOSS LANDING, California—To most people, the deep ocean seems as remote as the surface of the moon. But these deep waters may play a vital role in determining how the Earth's climate responds to the millions of tons of carbon dioxide that human activities release into the atmosphere each year. This week at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Seattle, two MBARI scientists have been invited to present talks that link the ocean to global climate change. A third MBARI scientist will explain how new tools provide a big-picture view of ocean processes on Earth and may be useful for studying oceans—and possible life—on other planets.
