Changing Currents Color the Bering Sea a New Shade of Blue
Coccolithophore blooms in the Bering Sea which heavily impacted fisheries. During the summers of 1997-98), a type of one-celled microscopic plant changed the color of the Bering Sea from its natural deep blue to a shimmering aquamarine in a matter of weeks. A massive bloom of the organisms has never before been observed there. Many believe their arrival in the Bering Sea is yet another sign of a larger transformation in the surrounding ecosystem.

Fish Kill in the Gulf of Oman
When large numbers of fish began dying in droves off the northern coast of Oman in the Persian Gulf in late August 2000, the local media reported that the deaths were due to the release of contaminated ballast water from a U.S. tanker visiting the area. Meanwhile, Omani authorities feared that a toxic algal bloom was killing the fish, raising concerns about health and food security for their nation's fishing industry. But which is it? + Fish Kill A Dangerous Intersection

New Scripps Oceanography project to study sediments and ecosystem restoration in Venice lagoon
Research will provide a glimpse of past and vital information for the future of city’s efforts to maintain its historic lagoon
Venice lagoon links to the Adriatic Sea through a series of inlets
Full size image available through contact Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, in conjunction with Italy's Venice Water Authority, Consorzio Venezia Nuova and Thetis SPA, has launched a multifaceted scientific program aimed at providing fundamental information about the effects of sediment translocation in Venice lagoon, a vital facet of the historic city of Venice, Italy. The new effort, a two-year, $1.5 million project for Scripps, is part of Italy's broad commitment to safeguard Venice and its lagoon, the coastal wetland that surrounds the city and links directly with the Adriatic Sea through inlets. A team of scientists with SIOSED (Scripps Institution of Oceanography SEDiment research group) will dissect and analyze key elements of Venice Lagoon's sediment through a program integrating geochemical, physical, microbial, toxicological and ecological science. This multidisciplinary approach, the project's leaders say, will provide valuable data about the lagoon and the dynamics involved in sediment movement.

Ocean science combines direct observation of this environment with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control it. Oceanographers are explorers as well as scientists, and many of the world's oceans are yet to be explored.
Students who have already developed a special interest in biology, chemistry, geology or physics, can choose marine biology or applied marine biology, marine chemistry, geological oceanography, etc. Students who have a strong interest in biology can combine this with chemical or physical oceanography in marine biology or oceanography, while those who are more interested in physical science can choose ocean science, which offers a wide choice of courses across the full range of disciplines. First of all, however, you need a B Sc degree in one of the above sciences. Do not make the mistake of getting a B Sc in oceanography right off the bat. This is like trying to go to a medical college without first learning basic biology or zoology. After that you will need an advanced degree, either M Sc or PhD

Their paper, North Atlantic Right Whales in Crisis is featured in the July 22nd edition of the journal Science Dr. Jeff Chanton , is the Florida Wildlife Federation's "Conservation Communicator of the Year" for 2005. He was honored for his advocacy of Florida's natural environment in both academia and the public. According to FWF, Chanton is very involved in local citizens groups' efforts to promote environmental education and energy conservation which has helped produce more committed conservationists to ensure a healthy Florida for the future. Dr. Jeff Chanton , collaborating with the Leon County Public Works Department and Tarek Abichou from the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering, received one of seven Florida Department of Environmental Protection grants for 2005-06 earmarked to support recycling and waste reduction. The group will be constructing a biofilter at the Leon County landfill created from tire waste, glass shards, and yard waste which is designed to sequester sulfur gases and methane emanating from the landfill thereby reducing the smell and the green house gas emissions.
