Envisat ready for lift-off
Envisat, European Earth observation satellite, has been launched from Kourou (Guyane) the 1 st of March at 01h07 UT (02 h 07 French time; 28 February, 22h07 local time) by an Ariane 5 rocket. Built by Esa, it is devoted to environmental studies. It will carry ten instruments, among which a radar altimeter, and the Doris system. Integrated in climate study and operational oceanography programmes, such as Godae/Mercator, in combination with Jason-1, Envisat data will support ocean and climate predictions. Altimetric and orbitography data from Envisat will be processed in part at CLS by the same ground system than Jason-1, SSALTO. Instrument control (Doris and Poseidon) and altimetric processing part of SSALTO were specified and developed by CLS for Cnes, the French space agency. CLS Team will ensure production, calibration and validation of these data, under CNES contract. More information: http://www.esa.int/envisat

ICESat Instrument Verified
Scripps Institution of Oceanography News Release Released February 26, 2004 This release was originally titled "Laser-Sharp Eyes Watching Earth's Polar Regions Change" A spaceborne laser instrument has taken a significant leap forward on its way to helping scientists answer a handful of important questions about Earth's surface. In results scientists are calling "spectacular," a team led by Jean-Bernard Minster of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, has verified the ultra-high precision of the instrument, the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System, or GLAS, aboard the NASA satellite ICESat (Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite). Launched a year ago, ICESat and the GLAS data it is transmitting to researchers are helping determine how levels of Earth's polar ice sheets and glaciers are changing. The ICESat mission is designed to provide valuable information on important issues such as climate change and its impact on the polar regions. On Feb. 11, Scripps researcher Helen Amanda Fricker and graduate student Adrian Borsa at the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps calibrated the accuracy of GLAS's ability to measure the height of Earth's surface to within five inches, a remarkable agreement with precise surface readings (the so-called "ground truth"). The accuracy is especially impressive, the scientists say, given that the satellite travels nearly 400 miles above the surface at more than 16,000 miles per hour.

"With increasing urban runoff, sewage spills and blooms of harmful algae off heavily populated coastal areas, it is very important to be able to sense, and then identify, particular ocean microorganisms quickly," said Ari Requicha, a USC professor of computer science and the project's principal investigator. "The quicker we learn that a pathogen is present in the water, the sooner we can warn people and begin action to correct the situation." Explore Related:
