181. Ocean Surface Topography From Space-Missions
an oceanography mission to monitor global ocean circulation, discover the tie between the oceans and atmosphere, improve global climate predictions, and monitor events such as El Ni±o conditions and ocean eddies. The Jason1 satellite carries a radar altimeter and it is a follow-on mission to the highly successful TOPEX/Poseidon mission. It is joint mission between France and USA. The satellite will be launched in May 2000.

MISSIONS - Jason-1
Primary Mission Achieved: Jason launch 3rd anniversary, December 7, 2004 This month the Jason mission satellite completes its primary three-year mission to measure the surface height of the worlds' oceans. Launched in December 2001, Jason now begins an extended mission to continue collecting detailed sea-surface topography data. Read the full story or check out the original launch images and videos See the CNES/AVISO tribute to Jason's success Jason-1 is the first follow-on to the highly successful TOPEX/Poseidon mission that measured ocean surface topography to an accuracy of 4.2 cm, enabled scientists to forecast the 1997-1998 , and improved understanding of ocean circulation and its effect of global climate. The joint NASA- CNES program will launch a French spacecraft on an American Delta II from an American base. Like TOPEX/Poseidon, the payload will include both American and French instruments. 185. Oceanographic Instrumentation & Environmental Optics - HOBI Labs
HOBI Labs offers a unique line of optical instruments and sensors. Specialises in optical oceanography and hydrooptical instrumentation for the marine sciences community.
http://www.hobilabs.com/
HOBI Labs offers a wide range of scientific-grade instruments for measuring water optical properties and the spectral light field. Our instruments are designed to operate in the harsh oceanic environment with reliability, accuracy and minimal maintenance. Basic and applied research in aquatic optics is a core activity of HOBI Labs. We also provide a variety of services to universities, naval laboratories and other institutions in the area of light and optics in the aquatic environment. Interested in optical backscattering, turbidity, suspended sediment concentrations? Take a look at our HydroScat line of spectral backscattering sensors. These instruments also measure chlorophyll and CDOM fluorescence! Interested in hyperspectral (full spectrum) measurements of plane (or scalar) irradiance and radiance? Browse our line of HydroRad radiometers. Do you need to control multiple instruments through a single serial connection and host computer? Autonomously operate and log data from a combination of serial and analog outputs? You'll be amazed at the power and versatility of our HydroDAS line of multi-instrument controllers and data loggers.

NAVY TO LAUNCH OCEANOGRAPHIC SURVEY SHIP MARY SEARS (T-AGS 65)
The Navy launches the newest oceanographic survey ship USNS Mary Sears (T-AGS 65), on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, during a 1 p.m. ceremony at Halter Marine Shipyard, Moss Point, Miss. Mary Sears becomes the 12th ship in the nation's history to be christened officially with a woman's name and the first oceanographic survey ship. The ship is named for a New England woman, Mary Sears, who as a member of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) in World War II, made pioneering efforts in oceanographic forecasting and was a major force in uniting the world oceanographic community while serving both her community and her country. Born at the turn of the 20th century, Sears was raised in Wayland, Mass. She attended Radcliffe College from which she received a bachelor's degree in 1927, a master's degree in 1929 and a Ph.D in zoology in 1933. While a graduate student, she worked as a research assistant at Harvard University and was one of the first 10 research assistants to be appointed to the staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution working both as a junior biologist and planktonologist.

The physical oceanography group at UConn's Department of Marine Sciences includes four faculty members: Frank Bohlen James Edson Ed Monahan, and Jim O'Donnell . In addition, Heidi Dierssen is professor in residence with the department.
A common thread of their various research interests is an emphasis on understanding fluid dynamics in the coastal environment, but the collective expertise of the group touches on a wide range of physical oceanographic phenomena. As a result, M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in the department gain a broad exposure to the essential subdisciplines of physical oceanography in addition to their in-depth research training.

Limnology and Oceanography
Limnology and Oceanography (ISSN 0024-3590) publishes original articles about all aspects of limnology and oceanography. The journal's unifying theme is the understanding of aquatic ecosystems. Submissions are judged on the originality of their data, interpretations, and ideas, and on the degree to which they can be generalized beyond the particular aquatic ecosystem examined. Laboratory and modeling studies must demonstrate relevance to natural environments; typically this means that they are bolstered by substantial "real world" data. Few purely theoretical papers are accepted for review; authors are strongly advised to include such materials in more complete papers that use the new theory to elucidate important features of aquatic ecosystems. Papers that focus on new measurement equipment and techniques, or on evaluations and comparisons of existing methods should be directed to the companion journal Limnology and Oceanography: Methods Six regular issues of Limnology and Oceanography are published each year by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO). In addition
