Resources for 7th Grade Oceanography Unit This web page was created for the 7th gr Science teachers here at JLMS for our 1/19/01 Professional Development day, and the short time I have to work with them to get their Oceanography Unit planned and written up. The goal is for teachers to find a resource or resources to use in a unit of their making, OR a lesson designed by another teacher that will be used this semester. Teachers, please use our JLMS Lesson Plan Template to write your lesson plan. It's on our server in the Teacher Folder/LINKS2/Transgrade Policies. If you're creating a web page to direct students to sites, please use the Web Page Templates in the LINKS2 folder/2000-01 Templates. I suggest that you open those templates with Page Mill on one of the iMacs in the lab. It'll make the editing easier. You can be paid for creating a web based unit that can be published on our LINKS site. I did a search at Blue Web'n and came up with these hits on "ocean" for middle school. Carolina Coastal Science

Research Material for School Students and Teachers The following are links to many sources of information for your school projects and assignments and also resource material for teachers. If you can't find what you are looking for here try Education Resources for Oceanography and Earth Sciences Volvo Ocean Adventure Follow the yachts in the Whitbread Round the World Race as they travel collecting data and learn about weather, climate, fisheries and environmental threats. Coral Reef Education for Students and Teachers (CREST) Manual (new 11/24/98) The CREST Manual is a manual on the basic ecology of coral reef ecosystems intended for use as an educational manual for elementary and high school instructors. It can also be used as a reference manual for researchers. It is specifically aimed to aid teachers and students in understanding the coral reef ecosystem and the necessity of protecting our coral reefs. Discovery Channel School This Web site is associated with the Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel. They provide Educator Guides to accompany their TV channels, videos, programming schedules, and curricular materials. Exploring Satellite Oceanography This is a high school lesson plan for using satellite imagery to teach oceanography. The emphasis is upon how sea surface temperature varies over space and time.

Bering Sea Climate and Ecosystem
http://www.beringclimate.noaa.gov/
This web site of the Bering Sea, one of the world's major fisheries, follows an explosion of interest in Northern Hemisphere climate study. Scientists here recognize a symmetric problem: climate change impacts ecosystems, and ecosystems serve as indicators for climate change. This site describes ecological and climatic indices for the Bering Sea which will serve as measures of climate and ecosystem status: weather, oceanographic and climate data, sea ice data, and fisheries and other biological data. This transitional website contains the main set of time series which will form the basis of a small set of Bering climate/ecosystem indices.

Brine Shrimp Raising brine shrimp in the classroom has long been known as a fun, easy, and popular science activity. From Teachers.net, this lesson provides tips on rearing brine shrimp, and using a microscope to learn more about their anatomy and physiology. The Brine Shrimp Project From NC State's Science Junction, this site instructs students in the design of a laboratory investigation on the affects of different factors on the hatching and development of brine shrimp eggs. Lessons can be scaled for grades K-12. Environment Canada's Water Teachers' Corner Environment Canada has produced many useful brochures and activity publications designed for the classroom. Materials can be ordered free of charge via the Web. Several publications also are available in PDF format. Project WET: Water Education for Teachers The goal of Project WET is to facilitate and promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of water resources through the development and dissemination of classroom-ready teaching aids and through the establishment of state- and internationally- sponsored Project WET programs. Educator pages provide activities shared by participating teachers. The Project WET Calendar posts workshop opportunities for teachers around the country. "The Incredible Journey" activity follows the "life cycle" of a water molecule. SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Animal Information Database At this site you'll find reference guides to dozens of species and ecosystems, plus virtual field trips with wildlife researcher, geographic information, "Ask Shamu," and more.
